What's this lever do?

When it all works properly (and it is Flintstones simple) the little lever makes a very effective kill switch. Easy to use and it won't shock you. The lever is isn't bolted to anything. It's just trapped beneath a tang on the cooling shroud, which in turn is held in place by the cylinder head bolts. Think twice before removing the head bolts. They like to be tightened in a specific order to a specific torque value. You can probably bend the tang enough to pull the lever out without removing the shroud. The lever needs to touch bare metal at the top of the spark plug where the wire attaches. If an incorrect plug has been used it may be too tall or too short to make contact with the lever. One of my motors was like that. The plug was too tall for it to work. The lever also also won't work if a rubber boot has been attached to the end of the plug wire. It might also be that there is so much grunge on the motor or the end of the lever to make a good path to ground for the electricity to follow, although that seems less likely.
