Briggs 5 HP ... Watch Where You Stick Your Fingers

Wow, you got lucky. Not likely to kill you but, it would ruin your month. Nothing like having a machine breathing for you for 18 hours to put the world in perspective.:doah: A buddy of mine got bitten by one about two years ago in a junk yard. He assured me, it was not fun.

    Help read this plug

Are you properly indexing the plug? The opening of the spark gap should face the exhaust valve. If the new pics are new plugs as they appear to be, then I would say definitely rich. I don't see any signs of a lean condition there at all.

How do I seal my head?

If you want a temporary fix, my best advice would be to identify the area where it is leaking and put a bead of JBWeld there and then all the way around the sealing edge. You want enough that it seals well but don't over do it. You DO NOT want it inside the cylinder area at all. Remeber it will...

    Just Call Me

WOW, telling people on the internet that they can call you and ask engine questions? You have giant eggs! I try to pretend like I don't know shizzle as much as possible. I already get enough calls about computer problems. I run a on site service business and I am the sole...

    worn surface?

Nothing good, that's for sure. What kind of engine is it? You can get parts for these things most of the time. Take some pictures of the crank and rod journals and the wrist pin for us.

    Scored Crank-havin trouble

Oldschool, I can't disagree with what you say about the workmanship of the clones. At some point you have to realize that I can go down to Autozone and get a complete GM 350CI long block for about $1400. At what point is B&S going to decide to stop gouging the crap out of us. $2600 for a 610cc...

    OHV Porting Help Wanted

You can just put holes up the side of the tube. Pressure on the ball would decrease as it got higher in the tube. You would have to blow through the intake valve. That would require a shop vac that can reverse or has an out port. You could make a crude flow meter and track it's rpm as well...

    OHV Porting Help Wanted

I'll bet you could make a quick flow bench from a piece of plexi, a shop vac, a ping pong ball and a bit of clear tube for the riser. Mark some graduations on the clear tube and at least you'll know if you are getting more flow by percentage. You wont get an exact CFM numbers, but you can...

    Scored Crank-havin trouble

Honestly, if you say it seized up once already, then it's only a matter of time. I'm not sure if you can get a rod with a tighter big end. If you can't buy a tighter rod, you could either pay over $100 for a machine shop to weld and grind the crank or get another one. At the very least, take...

    haven't started in 10 years ..

If you have a big tub that you can build a fire under, you can boil the tank for a few hours and that will clean it out and convert any rust on the inside to black iron oxide. Take it out when it's still hot and blow it out with air and then spray it full of WD40 and swash it around and dump it...

    Reliable 40+hp?

That's exactly what I am talking about mike. That is a kikker 5150 hardknock. Currently, the biggest engine they offer is a 250cc lifan v-twin(Chinease crap). I'm not sure how I feel about buying a kit either. The guys that actually make the frame are in the US. I believe Lifan is building these...

    Reliable 40+hp?

@restore kid. The supercharger comment was a joke. I could build a belt drive one out of carbon fiber if I wanted, and not be worried about shrapnel taking out my lower jibbs. There is not going to be much of a back fender as it is. The best theft deterrent in my book is people being afraid to...

    Reliable 40+hp?

The good news is, I do computer work for an old pawn shop owner who has hundreds of small engines to choose from. He has the hardest time moving the damned things. He probably has 150 2 stroke weed eaters in decent condition just laying around the place. He has already told me that I can pretty...

    Reliable 40+hp?

Here is my situation. My father and brothers all have expensive Harley Davidsons. Every year they get together and do a ride. They have always given me crap for my frugal(READ:POOR) ways. Gas has just gotten too expensive for me to care about working on my old hotrod anymore, so I intend to...

    My dream motor!!!

High guys. New guy here. I hail from NW florida. I love the information here. Thank you very much for the resource. About this $5k engine.. I don't really see the need for it. You can get a slightly used ~20hp Vtwin from a lawn tractor and have a much more reliable solution. I bet you could...
