timing

i was just wondering about timing. people say you can increase timing by 8 degrees and it will increase performance. so i was wondering if i have a stock clone and i advance timing by 8 degrees what will that give me? more top end? more bottom end? or what.

picked up a h30 motor having a model # 143.531122. found it to be an h30 but can't find in any of my books if this is an early-pre 1982 engine or 83 and later. they have different timing specs. i checked the timing of this motor and found it to be .026 btdc. ??? any one have a craftsman cross...

has any one ever tried advancing the cam shaft one tooth ? I'm working on mildly built briggs and stock the valves open and close at TDC "top dead center which means the piston is at the very top of the stroke " . By advancing the cam one tooth the intake valve starts to open just before TDC...

can you guys/gals direct me to a vendor that sells offset timing keys for the briggs OHV engines. while i am at it, for a intek 5.5hp on gas...how much timing should i start with? thank you

6.5 clone gonever removed , billet rod ,high volume breather ,18 lb valve springs header , wont start .? doe,s the timing have to be advanced 8 degree,s to start ?

Can you advance the timing on a stock 2.8 hp DB30 using a key that is already set to the desired degree of advance? If so, where can you buy the timing keys and how much advance will be beneficial to the little stock motor?

I pulled the side cover off of my 5hp briggs as I need to lengthen the snout on my crankshaft... and I noticed that the dot on the crank does not line up with the dot on the cam. The crank is the type with a roller bearing on the side cover side, so there is a "o" stamped in it on the throw...

My gear broke on my briggs 5 hp. I bought this crank used and do not know the model to be able to order a new gear and the right key. The key way on crankshaft is beveled on the short ends. Does anyone recognize this type of crank/keyway?

I want to advance the timming on my gx390 but i dont have a tool to measure how much to shave does anybody sell the keys in advance or can estimate the amount to shave.Thanks

people on here keep telling me to file my fly wheel timing key were do you file it on top bottom sides not to sure :confused: can some one help me with this tell me how and or have any pics of what it should look like and what does this do fo the life of the motor thanks:thumbsup:

hey i know you can file the flywheel key down to advance the timing but how much do i file off to get a 6 degree advance? and which side do i file?

30-32, 32-34, etc..... at the key. Is there a correlation (inverse/direct) between hp/torque and the amount advanced?

I'm rebuilding my HS40 and its been a while since I took it apart. I think I set the timing right by lining up the line on the cam with the mark on the crank but at TDC the intake valve is slightly open. It doesn't look right to me but is this correct? Also does anyone have a list...

Does it help rich and or lean carb mixtures. I've searched hard found nothing.
