1st Panther build

#1

I'm starting my 1st Panther project that will be slung onto a Lil Indian. I'd just like to hear some of the tricks you guys are using on the throttle linkage, carb mounting etc. Can't believe how hard that carb nut is to mount! TIA.

I use chainsaw carbs from the early sixties. Tillitson HC carbs from David Bradley carbs work well. They are not so large to allow the engine to overrev, they have throttle return springs and H/L adjustment screws. They are gravity fed, so no need to drill your reed plate.

Hey thanks, I just got it bench fired and can see there may be some carb issues. Cool little motor and want to see it through.

Hey Clinton czars, looks like I have an oil seal soaking my points. Makes it a little hard to keep a good spark. Does anyone have a recco or part # for that seal? Thanks!

Thanks but doesn't look like he's been around since 10/25. I found an old thread that he mentioned oil seals but not sure if the bearing seal is the one I'm looking for. This was from a 1/24 posting he made;

Go to ebay and search for:
Timken - 470601

That will get you to a seller that has everything you need.

471646 is for the A400 PTO
470601 is for the A490 PTO
254270 is for both bearing plates

I think 254270 fits A400 and A490 flywheel side (POINT SIDE ) covers.
Tha PTO side is different because the A490 has a ball bearing and the A400 has a smaller bushing.

Most parts stores can cross that number and might have a seal in stock.

What is a good mix for these motors? Engine label calls for 1/2 pint per gallon or 16-1 which sounds really rich.

I have run them as lean as 20:1, but they like the rich mix just fine. Is your engine an A400? If so, it has no ball or roller bearings in it.
Stick with 30 wt NONdetergent oil, and I suggest you stick with 16:1 mix. They are not making parts anymore, so keep them lubed.
I have a NEW custom aluminum mount for that, and Timothy Taft on Facebook makes custom headers, very nice and very reasonably priced.

I also run them closer to 40:1 if they have main and wrist pin bearings, but bushings, in my humble opinion, need to be floating in oil.

https://www.rucenterprises.com/Clinton/Clinton_A400_parts_list.pdf Good part numbers and general info.

I was going to mention that the Hokakas you referenced are full bearing engines, but not the place to disagree.
I have a few Jacobsen J321 smokers that are in the 100cc class like the Panthers, but they are full bearing ingines and I run them on Amsoil 50:1 synthetic. They run about the same, just less mess.

I just tried a new 254270 seal on the points side and still leaking oil. It's an A400 so I don't know if there may be another seal?
