Been struggling to find much time to work on the baja this spring and summer. I did pick up a pair of suzuki rv125 handlebars to throw on it. Rough cut the under seat mounting brackets for the rear rack. And I got a litte rack that I'm toying with the idea of putting on the fake tank lid. Though that little rack is a little taller than I would like. We'll see if I can get the gumption together to cut it down. Right now internally arguing its real usefulness. Haha

That's a neat little rack.

I vote to put the short uplift to the front

Whatever you carry, you'll need to strap it regardless of location of upsweep. With it to the front, you won't chance bumping into the upsweep with your stomach. During a rowdy ride.

Thanks!

Yeah, becoming one with the rack during a rowdy ride or an unforseen accident was a thought that crossed my mind. Haha

I'm still thinking on it a bit. Need to buckle down and finish the rack I'm welding for the rear. And I need to make the previous rack I used on the rear work on the front. RACKS... I NEED MORE RACKS!! Haha

With some more caffeine and motivation I'm making some progress on the cargo rack. Got the under seat brackets cut out and predrilled. Are they perfect, no. But I'm please with them for cutting them by hand and notching with a coping saw. The second one turned out a little cleaner, with lessons from the first one. I want to get the brackets tacked in place and use them as a template to mark the frame to drill. Then the holes will get drilled out to their final diameter. A smarter man would just weld everything solid to the frame. But I'm stuck on the idea of being able to unbolt the rack if I choose to do so.

Making good progress. Got the rack all tacked together. Need to weld the lower brackets on the frame and make the supports for the rack. But all in all it is really starting to shape up. Sorry for the dark pictures, have to do all my work in the dead of night these days.

That's looking good.

Will there be struts to support the back of the rack ? (I'm thinking so, seeing the holes in the tabs)

Thanks @RobertC. Yes there will be struts. I was working on them last night. Didn't take any pictures. First one was a test... my measurements were a little off. But I learned how I need to make it work. Hopefully I can get some time tonight to work on it. 10:30 pm till 1 am. Is my prime project working hours lately. Is what it is. If I don't do it then it will never get done.

You could probably hang a small tool bag under that rear rack. It really looks good on there with the saddle seat. Good project, coming along nicely.
Thanks @sparkwizard. I'm pretty pleased with how it is turning out. Hopefully I can get it done before the end of the month. Going camping in early September. Would be awesome to use it to carry my gear back to the site. Like last year, but with a more sturdy rack.

Got a lot done tonight. Had to take the mounting tabs off the frame and the rack. So I could put a lot more of a radius on them. Got it the supports made and everything all tacked back in place. Unfortunately the bike fell over (my own fault) when I went to fine tune a bend on the LH support. But none of my tacks broke when it fell and nothing shifted. So that at least gave me confidence in the robustness of the rack. I started to finish weld the brackets but ran out of wire. So called it a night. I'll have to go pick up some more wire tomorrow and get back at it.

Here's the moment everyone has been waiting for, I'm going to air my dirty laundry with some closer photos of the welds in the daytime. Are they pretty no, a professional welder I am not. This is when a novice is welding with a long time in-between practicing and in the dark. But here the welds are, definitely not my best work. But for the loads this rack will carry, should be sufficient. Some of my welds don't look arguably any worse than the other welds on the frame (possibly just personal opinion), and I trust my life to those welds. Haha

Sprayed a little paint on the frame. Not a perfect match, but close enough for running through the woods.
