5hp FH valve end damaged?

#1
I have abused Briggs 5hp Fun Power engine I am trying to get running. After I got the valves out (wasn't easy, another thread) I noticed the end of the valve stem that rests in the keeper was badly worn.

1st I thought should toss the valve, because excess wear could effect valve lash. But after thinking about it, this shouldn't effect lash. It would just keep the valve from rotating and wearing evenly, probably not a good thing, but would probably work OK for awhile.

I plan to run the engine stock on my minibike, so OK to use old worn valve or should I toss it in the trash and buy a new one?

I did a search and didn't find anything addressing this issue, any comments welcomed.

Thanks for all replies, I think TRK has best answer.

I think got worn from floating the valves. Engine came off gokart and didn't run when I got it. It had broken dipper, appear governor spring was shortened, so engine was probably being over rev'd. I floated the valves on my 6.5 HF clone I race. It beat-up the end of the valve that rests in the valve keeper, so I know what it looks like.

I am going to buy new valves.

Hello jesse8931, thanks for link. When I go to OldMiniBikes and go the Briggs parts, these parts do not show up. Site may have a marketing issue, wasn't easy for me to find, I didn't think OldMiniBikes had the part.

I have torn apart several flatheads and have had some valves that were a pain to get out because the end was slightly mushroomed over, this is from the lifter slamming the valve just like if you hammer on the end of a bolt.....

Check and see how loose the valve is in the guides also...my nephew had a 5hp and it started running rough so we pulled it apart, the guide was so worn the valve cocked sideways in the guide wearing the stem on an angle and cocking the valve spring... if you get much more than a slight wiggle then the guide is worn and needs replaced...
