Drove 5 hrs. round trip to pick up this survivor condition roller. I really wasn't in the market for another small frame Cat, but after giving it a closer look realized it was a very early 300X (1969) with an original disc brake setup. personally I have only seen 300X bikes with a scrub brake. Maybe Derek will chime in here and give an idea of how many may have been made with the disc brake.
Also, being it's a 69' it would have had a 3HP Briggs engine and I'm hoping it might be a little easier finding a period correct Briggs than a Tecumseh. It has the welded foot pegs, engine plate with no depression for the kickstand bolts, common on a 69'.
The bike in general is in great survivor shape, the seat is near perfect, the paint is original and presentable as is the chrome handle bars. Just a little patina to give it character. Wheels are nice but could use a detail. The double indian head carlisle tires are in great shape with NO dry rot.
So it's missing the original engine, the switch plate and clutch cover not to mention the kelsey hayes brake caliper, but considering the condition and that it's a 69' and a disc brake bike, and not a scrub brake 300X, I think it was worth the trip.............. I wonder if that's a 350ss with a set of 300x forks on it -- or maybe just the bars anyway. I'm eager to hear what Derek has to say about it

That's very nice. My dad has an original paint 250x with the disc brake. Very cool find!

Nice find. I thought the 69 300TT was the one with the fixed pegs and disc brake. I have no reason to believe your front end was swapped for one with a 300X decal, but since the front ends take so much damage, it's possible. Your frame appears to have had fenders mounted to it at one time. I was able to track down on of the HPE Engineers from the 70's, but he had no input on the smaller Cats. We know that several models never made it into the brochures, and I suspect that they had parts laying around for the different models and added disc brakes and fenders (etc) as a partial run for sales events, or an attempt at making a "deluxe" version of a bike for a specific market. Were you able to find the serial number?

Here's a 300TT I did a few years ago. Tec motor. Competition orange. (Ford color from 1970)

Dave,
The serial number on my bike is- 9011251.
I agree 100 percent with your above statements, and also think they may have used at certain times what they had laying around to keep a certain production run moving. Another thing that you mentioned was some models not even being in the brochure, and that is a fact, I found that out when I picked up a 300SS a while back and did alot of research.
By the way that 300TT of yours is sweet. Was that the original motor or should it have been a Briggs??

When I restored it, I was new here and with the mini bike thing. At the time, I am sure I thought it was a Tec. After looking around a bit trying to come up with a half way intelligent response to your post, I discovered it should have been a Briggs. LOL. Derek has some info on these 69's, and might have a couple of examples of fixed-peg versions in various guises.

What happened to the grips. I thought they looked cool as hell
I kinda liked the yellow grips also. I was thinking about getting that one, but it was just too close to me, seems i prefer to drive 5 to 6 hours each way to get my bikes.:doah:
I have the grips, they are vintage winner circle and are in perfect condition. If anybody needs them, PM me...............
