axle locked

#1
got this cart given to my son from his uncle.
needs clutch.

it seems really hard to turn locked rear axle but I think it has a diff.
rolls fine until you turn the wheel.
I think he may of had something welded in the rear axle
is this a diff and if so can it be rebuilt.

It looks like a diff, jack it up and hold one wheel and try to turn the other if it wants to turn the wheel you are holding something inside is binding :doah: you should be able to clean it and get it working again if not you should be able to save the axels and get a new center section

Spoke with my brother inlaw
He said all the gears in the diff where junk
So he bought a straight axle and put it all the way through
And drilled and pinned it
And he doesn't have the two other axles or gears from it
Problem is it won't turn and when you try to turn it is like hitting the brakes
And it smoked the clutch
So I think I'll be looking for an complete new axle and diff setup
I wonder what type it has now
Or hopefully I can get a peerless setup and make it work with the brakes
The way it is now
Amy idea where to get a diff axle setup
Or one like it has now
Thanks
Mike

lI got a Peerless 100 diff from Northern Tool for around $120 + freight. Works like a champ. You have to use a Peerless sprocket, though. Northern Tool's sprocket that they have in their catalog will not fit. You can get the proper sprocket direct from Peerless.
