Be careful out there in the woods

Last night we decided to go for a ride on the quads. We headed out, went down the old rail road tracks, went out the dirt roads, hit millers pond area, watched a guy get a Polaris Sportsman 800 buried over the gas tank in a mud hole. Pretty fun time.

We headed back and the 3 year old wanted to go back down the tracks to look for deer. We are heading down the tracks. Girlfriend is behind me. Now I noticed on the way in a bunch of truck tire tracks. Which struck me as odd as there is no reason in the world to run a truck back there, no where to go, and nothing to see other than old rail road tracks and mud. Not to mention its not very wide. My 56" wide rzr felt like it filled up the whole road.

Well, we are coming back down the tracks about a mile from the end, and off in the distance I see a truck with guys carrying plants back and putting them in the bed. 3 of them are armed and 3 are carrying plants. I hurried up stuck the 4 wheeler in reverse, and turned around, girl friend was behind me and I told her, get turned around now and get moving. Of course she wants to ask questions, I tell her shut up and follow me now, don't screw around.

She looks down the tracks and sees the guys with guns staring at us.

Obviously we stumbled into some people moving pot plants or something. Not a good situation. I've seen it before out in the woods, we used to pull them out of the ground or run over them when we seen them.

I got a good look at the plate, and think I was pretty sure I was right on the numbers. Called the sheriff and gave them the plate number and told them what I seen. Not sure if they will do anything, but figured it was a good thing to do.

Keep your eyes open when out in the woods in the middle of no where. Never know who you might run into. I was armed. I had a Springfield Armory XD(M) loaded with 20 rounds of 9mm and 2 back up clips of 20. But be darned if I was going to get into a shoot out with them. Not to mention the 3 year old sitting on the tank. I never venture out into the woods without a gun on my side.

Glad you're OK. If they ended prohibition this would not be a problem.

I don't know if you mean to legalize it or not, but I really have nothing against people who occasionally use. It's no worse than getting drunk. I personally have never done it, and don't plan on it.

Even if it was legalized these type of people would still be out there growing it and selling ect. They would try to by pass the taxes and legalities of buying it legally.

Look at people who still brew and sell moonshine. I can go to the store and buy whatever beverage I want, but people still choose to bypass the taxes and store fronts to make their own and sell it.

Federally mandated mininum sentancing for less than 50 plants (that means one plant, NO SELLING) is a felony, five years and $250,000 mininum.

Doesn't matter what the individual state law says about it. (20 states have legalized for medicinal use, and CO and WA have allowed recreational use)

Kinda early harvest.
If they waited a little longer for the nights to get longer, their crop would have been a bit more potent.

So I here......

Very scary to see guys with guns in the middle of nowhere...especially with the children on board. You did the right thing by gettin' outta there...but why is it that the wife/GF always needs to know now when danger looms?

There is also other dangers you need to be aware of. Lots of these guys also make booby traps out shotgun shells. You could not see a trip wire and have on go off. Kinda sad you can't go in the woods any more. Where I grew up in Northern Cali, there was rumors that some of the "agriculturalists" had a tiger. There was an area with 10 foot chainlink and razor wire. You just never know anymore...please be careful!

Buddy of mine had a similar situation about 10 years ago, there were a bunch of guys out riding in the woods on trails they had rode their entire lives. He came down a trail that went down a steep hill and it was wet so at the bottom he was sliding and lost control and ran off the path back into the brush and woods and stopped in this huge wooded clearing and there was about 25-50 big plants. He knew that it more than likely being watch so he grabbed his bike and took off, they cam back through about an hour later and the area was CLEARED out, plants chopped and everything gone.
He said that he was certain he was being watched when it all happened and said that if he had stuck around he probably would have been shot on the spot. You just never know anymore what you might run into in the woods this day and age.

When my son was very young and prone to arguing or ignoring what I told him to do, I sat him down and explained that generally that wasn't a big deal but there might be times when it would be extremely important that he do what I said immediately and without fuss. I gave him some examples that he could understand and then told him that if I called him William R instead of Billy that would be one of those times for him to obey calmly and immediately without question. He understood the difference and the few times it has been necessary he responded appropriately. One time at a small fair I saw things were getting ugly between two groups just a few yards ahead of us and I told him to turn around and walk calmly the way we had come. He did so and we avoided being in the middle of a big fight about 30 seconds later. Fortunately there was no gunfire. Another time we entered a restroom in Atlantic City and there was a guy that looked like he was having a schizophrenic or drug related episode (talking loudly and aggressively to some invisible person and smacking the toilet stall); I said William R turn around and calmly walk out. He did and I think we avoided a potentially bad situation. I had my 45 with me in the first instance but was unarmed in New Jersey.

My friend from Estonia has a signal with his wife that he speaks in Estonian if the situation looks shakey.

That is a very good idea/plan to have because we all know that kids know EVERYTHING even when it is a life or death situation!!!

Thanks for the thought and getting me thinking.
