Brand new to mini bikes - need some help

#1
I was given what I think is a 1974 Scat Cat (has the front tag that has Princess Auto inscribed). It's rough...I just replaced the engine with a 6.5 Power Fist and I and still trying o figure out how to make it run smoothly. Where should those springs connect so that it doesn't surge and run smoothly like a bike should.

Also, I need to replace the throttle cable and possibly the assembly on the handle bar itself....where is the best source for these?

Lastly, the rear brake hardly works. Where can I get new pads?

Thanks for helping out a noob!!!!!

Welcome to OldMiniBikes.

Parts can be had from OldMiniBikes Warehouse.

Not familiar with the engine you speak of. Got pics?

Power Fist is another version of the Honda clone. I imagine all the data required could be found here with a search of 212 Predator issues with throttle and govenor.

Here are a few pics I took. I really don't know any history on this thing but it seemed like a neat thing for my son to play around on. It has, what I think is, a rear brake drum. The brakes don't work very well so I was going to look at replacing the whole unit...I saw some on the OldMiniBikes warehouse site. Anyone know what size of drum is a direct replacement?

One thing that seems like it would present a problem with the throttle is that the cable runs from the front (handle bar) of course, but then it has to do a fairly hard 180 to come back to thread into the linkage. Seems like this would cause some binding.

How do I know if it is running a #35 or #40 chain?

Thanks for the welcomes and for the information you all share on this forum!

Welcome to the forum--fellow Canadian. The Powerfist engine is the same as the Predator engine that Harbor Freight sells. The throtle is designed to work as you have it in the pic but I thought it would have been a longer cable. You do route it out the back, around and through the clamp on the engine.Any that I have done have a cable that you can have a gentle loop coming back--you may need a longer cable. Also did you loosen the throtle nut and remove the plastic washer--this will loosen up the control.Your bike was sold by Princess Auto. Parts are available from OldMiniBikes. I am in Toronto and if I can help email me at billshorney@gmail.com. Should be a nice riding bike--the engine has all kinds of power so your boy will have to be gentle with the controls. Cheers Bill.

That's great information...thanks! I'll order a new throttle cable from OldMiniBikes Warehouse. I knew to loosen the nut on the throttle but the information about removing the plastic washer was news to me...will do it tonight.

Thanks!

Welcome to the fun.
Im pretty sure they are 4"rims and you are probably running a #35 chain. I have the same Rear rim and brake combo and it sucks. I could never get it to stop well. You can get a longer cable at OldMiniBikes. I see you added a header and opened up the air intake a bit. You might need to re-jet if its not running smooth. Good luck and welcome to the madness.

hey medic , since you already have the tank removed you could just order a top plate wouldn't need a longer cable and you could get rid of that stock linkage:thumbsup:

Bahaha...I wish I could say that was true!! That is the Franken-exhaust...a welded together combination of the original pipe and the muffler that came with the new engine. We had to concoct something to make it fit. I hadn't looked at this forum before doing so...I had no idea that you could buy aftermarket exhaust for these things
