So, I'm jumping back into this pond.

For context, The Bride stayed the West Coast after the show. A good friend of mine who's about the best wrench I know is going to dial it up to eleven with a tiny turbo and Megasquirt FI, and maybe a revision of the craptastic rear suspension along the way.

Now, however, I'm missing having a CVT bike to ride. So, this nice little 247cc 5HP diesel followed me home. $295 in total, w/tax & shipping. I have a couple of rolling bike chassis I could pair it with. Should be another fun project!

Well, the diesel will go into this old KTM frame without too much effort, but there isn’t clearance for a torque converter unless I make some modifications. Maybe I’ll just run the centrifugal clutch to a jack shaft and gear it super low. With only about 5HP on tap, it’s going to be S-L-O-W no matter how I rig it up.

Is it an optical illusion that output shaft looks tiny ?

It looks as though there’s another project on the horizon. I couldn’t resist.

For those who are not familiar with it, the GS190 (mfg ~2008/09 to ~2018) is similar to the cheaper GC engine architecture, but was upgraded with a cast-iron cylinder liner, 3-piece oil control ring, and all-ball-bearing crankshaft, plus cast alloy valve cover. It retained the same nylon cam and toothed rubber timing belt, so this is strictly a run-as-stock engine. But it’s lighter, smoother, and quieter than a GX clone/Predator, and I really like that it has a vertical cylinder. It’s also somewhat unusual, which makes it a little more interesting.

This one is NOS from very early in production. The serial number is #1795, and it has the “6.0” on the decal, which they did away with fairly quickly, because it is actually a 5.2 HP engine by ANSI test methods.
