Briggs 19.0 intek carburetor question

#1
Hey y'all.

I'm removing my carburetor to clean it on my Poulan 42" riding mower.

The bowl has something electronic looking on the bottom what the heck is it for ?

Electronic fuel shutoff
I wouldn't go that far saying it's "electronic", it is just a simple solenoid style switch that cuts off the fuel but more importantly it prevents the backfire that commonly happens on shutdown while the engine is spooling down but still has spark, air and fuel.

I wonder if the device is or is not totally necessary. Might be an EPA-only thing to control emissions

It cuts off the fuel to the engine when the key is turned off. It is designed to keep the engine from dieseling when shut off hot. It does not meter or adjust fuel. It is either on or off. If you can find one on an old carb (tecumseh) that matches the threads, you can install the adjustable power screw in the place of that solenoid. My Troy Built mower has a Kohler engine with an old, adjustable Tec carb on it.

Hey folks, a follow up here.

The carburetor and fuel line were all gummed up... even though I only use pure gasoline. But realistically the original carb was on since new, and lasted about 9 years.

The new $14 amazon carb works great.

The solenoid wire plugged right up.

I replaced all fuel line between the gas tank, and carburetor. I used a briggs red fuel filter, and included a shutoff valve for the gas , so I can run the bowl dry before storing.

Have a good one y'all.
