Hello all I just picked up an old cat mini bike. I think it originally had a 2.5hp Briggs on it. I can’t find one to replace it. What do you all think about putting on a 79cc 3 hp predator engine. Thanks

Look at the serial number stamped into the frame to help determine the year. I'm pretty sure it only would of had a Briggs if its a '69 or possibly early '70. Either way a period correct HP engine Briggs or Tecumseh shouldn't be too hard to find. I would put it back to original if it were mine.
If it had a 2.5 Briggs engine it was probably a 1969 Cat 250X. Cats only used Briggs engines in their first year of production (1969).
Can you share photos of the bike that you have? Pictures can help a lot more with identifying what you have.
As for putting a Predator 79cc on it, what are you planning on doing with the bike? Are you planning on restoring it or just having it as a rider? If you are restoring then obviously you'll have to hunt for the right Briggs engine to keep it original. But for a rider a Predator will work fine. In my opinion if the bike is in very nice original condition with minimal to no mods I would restore it back to as original condition as I can.
Here is a pic from when I picked it up. It is just a guess on my part what it is. Th engine in it is too big spark plug is touching the frame. If anybody knows what it is let me know. I guessed cat because I found the rear sprocket I need and it it said it was for a cat.

I am pretty sure that is a Cat 250X that you have. Those rims & frame match a Cat 250X design. What is the year on your bike? You can check the year by looking at the serial number stamped on the front of the engine plate on the frame the first digits represent the year. "9" is a 1969, "70" is a 1970, "71" is a 1971 etc.
I'll give you my opinion on your bike: I would personally use it as a rider and not restore it because it is too far from original for me to want to bother. The biggest setback for me is that it appears to have been repainted and most of the original parts are gone. I think that's the original Briggs engine on your bike too but it has been repainted. Once the paint is modified there's no going back to the original paint. The only original parts that I see on your bike in the photos is the rims, maybe the tires, and maybe the motor. I would just put a Predator engine on it and enjoy riding it!

To me,that looks to be more like a 4HP or 5Hp Briggs that's on it now as look at the height of the engine and the distance between the top of the engine and the top of the frame. I probably have a period correct looking 2.5 HP Briggs if you end up wanting to go that route with it.
As one person already stated probably not worth it to restore to original. The engine on it is too big can’t even remove spark plug as it is rubbing against the frame. I’d be interested in a 2.5 Briggs if we could work out a decent price and shipping cost and the engine runs good. I can’t find anything near me that is worth the money. Otherwise I will probably go with the 3 hp predator engine.

What's it's intended purpose? Would it be a starter bike for a youngster (beginner? experienced?) or a yard bike for an adult (large? small?). Maybe it's just a fun project with no real purpose.
Test ride went good. Still needs some minor chain adjustments. I need a different throttle return spring way too heavy. Also need to find a clutch guard. Surprised me a bit this thing goes pretty darn good for a small bike. Will be looking for my next project soon.
