"Cherry"....what are they?

#4
Arctic Cat used them, among other brands from the 70's. Made in Japan by Cherry. They made other parts as well, like grips, throttle housings and even the foot pegs used on Arctic Cat SSSCat models in 1970.

Super high quality stuff, btw.

These ball-end variety were used in mid 1971 to replace the banned non-ball variety after kids were getting stabbed in accidents. Cherry levers come in plain and ball-end, both with and without cable adjusters built in. Arctic bikes always used the adjuster variety. Came in both 7/8" and 1" versions.

By the way, the image below is of a common knock off. Note the pointed stabilizer web on the riser. They are almost interchangeable with Cherry, but the levers on these are usually a little bit shorter. Be careful of sellers claiming these to be Cherry. There are some of these out there that are vintage, but also lots of modern Chinese reproductions. Either way, this style was never used on Arctic Cats. Not sure about other bikes.

Cherry levers came in left and right hand versions. There is a slot on the bottom side to aid in installing and removing the cable end. Left hand versions are plentiful but right hand ones are a bit scarce. In a pinch, you can usually buy a knock off lever assembly and swap the blade onto a real Cherry mount to make a right hander, but again, the length is a bit short. Still better than using a left hander upside down.

I've seen some sellers with large quantities of left hand Cherry's claim many bikes used 2 left levers originally, flipping one over for the right side. I don't buy that unless someone here is certain of an example. Arctic always used a proper set.

... more than anyone ever cares to know about Cherry levers, lol
