Crankshaft Thread Size?

it depends on the era of the engine. starting around 1980 to 1982 tecumseh changed the flywheel taper on the small frame motors and also changed the flywheel nut size from 5/16-24 (5/8" socket) to 3/8-24 (3/4" socket.)

I did not know that, thanks Clay.

For our purposes, I think 5/16-24 is correct. I do have some BIG old Kohler and Briggs engines that are tapped 3/8NF.
But they are tall cast iron thumpers.

when tecumseh started drilling/taping the PTO for a bolt in the 1980s, they usually used 3/8-24, not 5/16-24. but when i drill the PTO i always use 5/16-24, because it's easier...

The two tecumseh engines I have that are factory drilled and tapped are 3/8-24. 1 is an ‘84 hs50 and the other is an h40 replacement engine that is a mid 90’s.

Keep in mind if your drilling one that doesn't have a threaded hole already going with the smaller 5/16 thread would give you a second chance later on if anything bad happened in the future and you needed to re-thread it. You could go 3/8 at that point.

Ha that is true. My briggs 3 h.p. from the 70s has a 1/4x20 i put in it. If i wasn't 12 or so then i would have knew to use a 1/4x28. Doesn't require much to keep a clutch from side stepping. I still remember buying the tap from a service star hardware store with grass cutting money i suspect.
