Electric Start Hs50

#1
I have an electric start Hs50 project i want to do.
Has an iron flywheel but it is a generator flywheel. Have to run a square shroud.
This is not for performance, more for convenience.
I have a wiring harness from my old yard tractor with a key.
I tested it and it works.
My worry is about if the 12v starter will have enough torque to be able to start the engine?
I know i will need a battery, and the generator should be enough to run lights and still charge the battery.
This motor is cammed and has springs/retainers, i'm thinking of swapping a stock cam back in it to keep the compression release.
Prob better to run all stock stuff with the iron flywheel anyways.
The motor is a tag motor, NOS stock short block i think i got it from Markus. I did put a billet rod in it. It has a late taper crank.
I'd love to run a bearing side cover but i don't have a BB crank with the long taper.

I think I have 2 bb hs50 motors on the shelf…one is a very solid and great candidate for a rebuild…the other is very good but missing a flywheel I think…or I have a bb crank…let me know if you can use any…

Well thanks Skipp! let me see what i have here and i'll get back to you.
If you have the crank i need, i'll gladly pay you for it, or maybe trade some parts for it.
Are you looking for anything?

I had a couple 8 hp Tecs w/ring gears but no starters. The shroud had a bump to allow the worm drive to slide in and engage the the gear. becausee it didn't come with a starter there was a backing plate to covered the internals. From the pics, I don't see a path for worm gear to engage the the ring. If its working then obviously I need to put my glasses on. ............... Uh errrr what were we talking about?

The more i think about it, i don't think this engine would benefit from a BB side cover.
It has a brand new bushing crank, flywheel is the weak link for RPMs.
Want to keep the RPMs low anyways and the bushing crank is beefier i think VS the 3/4" BB
That flywheel is not light.
But having the alternator and electric start with a key seems like a cool idea. Just something i want to try.

I have a nearly identical project. I plan to put a billet rod in it just because I have one, leave the governor alone inside. I might play with the springs a little bit, but I want a good, solid , reliable engine for the wife to ride. I don't have the charge coil, so I plan to use a rechargeable RC car battery.

I'm wondering, since a OHHs50 cam will fit the flathead Hs50, can the compression release cam from a OHV 5hp fit and work?
That would be ideal for electric starter.
OHH50? That is OHV. I can't swear to it, but I think it will work. I'll do some checking. Does your HS50 not have a compression release cam?

Part #33158 is listed for HS50 and has a comp release.
