H50 1 inch Crankshaft Tap Size

I have a question maybe someone here can answer. The H50 I have has a drilled 1" PTO. I need to tap this for a TC mount-up job. Hole size is unknown but a 5/16 drill will fit with some wobble. I know that a 5/16-24 bolt is common for other shaft diameters but what is workable for the 1" shaft?

I have no experience with a 1" PTO, but can you tap it 3/8"? I would keep it as small as you can at this point! Is there any reference from the TC manufacturer?

Well, I've got a 3/8-24 bottom tap and it would be the next larger size. I just don't know if there's enough meat to cut and feel safe about not slinging a drive unit. The 5/8 drill really is loosey-goosey in the hole that was there. The engine is NOS so I guess this diameter is stock...

You should be fine! You have lots of metal there!

if you're afraid 5/16 won't work, then go 3/8", especially if you already have the tap for it
