Harbor Freight 99cc Predator engine issue.

#1
My buddy was having troubles with his blue 2 1/2hp clone from Harbor Freight engine. So he decided to throw on a new Predator 99cc. Both are 5/8" shafts... The problem is that the new Predator shaft wont accept the same 5/8" 20 series driver. The shaft is a little bigger. We even went to HARBOR FREIGHT and checked the display model. Same thing. I don't know if it is the batch they have or if it is all the new 99cc engines that are NOT going to work. Anyone have a problem mounting a 5/8" clutch or torque converter on one? Randy

if its just ever so slightly, bolt it down to a good work bench, fire it up and use Emory cloth on the shaft while its idling around and around. ooooor, does it look like its a full 3/4" shaft?

The guy at Harbor Freight measure it and it was 5/8". I believe he said the blue one was about 1/64" smaller. I told my buddy the same thing. Fire it up and take some off. But he wants it to be nice...lol...

Apparently they are aware of this ISSUE. But he actually said the most people who go to Harbor Freight realize that not everything is up to spec AND the actual sizes can vary............ I mean really. We know it is cheap junk for the most part. But you shouldnt have to take it to be machined before you can use it.....

I have a 99cc,and the shaft is .630
and I bought a maxtorq 5/8" 11 tooth...the 5/8", is .625 I took the clutch apart and chucked it up in the lathe then ran an 16mm bit through the body of the clutch...I would not try to do this with a hand held drill motor(if you had one that would hold a 16mm bit) because of the keyway slot will tend to drift the bit off center and the hole will be out of round... By being in the lathe,it stays true and on center with no vibration on the engine(A good way to wallow out the sidecover bearings)....Scootercat....

Unfortunately the 212cc wont fit on the Baja Cub trike. I wish they still had the Blue engines. Like the one pictured. Filled up the new 99cc with fluids started it up and took out the grinding stone. Fits now... But shouldn't have to. That is the issue. Although the new mounting bracket makes it much easier to mount than to have to drill new holes..

Hello scootercat, After you drill out the clutch hub you have taken out the key inside the hub. Do you just slide in another key like on a clutch that doesn't have a built in key?

Chazdaddy, the clutch that I have has a keyway for a key,not one with a key as part of the hub....Is that what Your asking?.....Scootercat....
