How to tell shaft size

#1
Hi guys, new here. How could you tell which Tecumseh has a 3/4" or 5/8" shaft other than measuring it. Looking for an older motor for a Golden Pinto. Thinking possibly an older chipper/shredder or snow blower. Trying to find a way to know before I make the trip to puck up. Thanks

Thanks. That’s a good trick. Was trying to find a way, possibly by engine numbers. Looking at blowers and can’t ask the sellers to measure the shafts.
Ah, you're sourcing an engine sight-unseen, that's the real trick. Maybe someone here can state unequivocally that "all" [such and such displacement] blower engines take a __inch shaft. Might pay to narrow it down yourself, by that I mean finding a trend in certain engines having a certain diameter shaft.... It typically goes by displacement or horsepower ratings. Bigger engine, bigger shaft....

I checked here but did not see a code specification on shaft size, but it was a fast skim...

[EDIT:] it is in Chapter 10, Engine specifications, page 90 at the end of the manual

I have a 4hp with a 1" shaft. Looking fo something with a 5/8" or 1/2" shaft. Could use the 1" but the clutch will have 14 teeth. Looking to stay around 10-12 teeth. Gotta move my big a$$ around.

I would say most 4hp and up are most common for 2-1/4 long 3/4" PTO's. If you find engine online just ask the seller to measure for you. Not sure about 1/2" don't think I ever heard of that size? Snowblower engines are great to convert for mini bikes. Usually in good shape because not used that frequently, especially in states that get very little snow. I look for early 70's Ariens which used the Tecumseh engines.
