hs40 broken cam

Wow! I have never seen a cam do that before, either. Was the radiator leaking?
That cam looks like it was run like that, but that just cannot be true. The way it is worn smooth is weird.

i've seen a broken cam before on an HS50. and it destroyed the engine. what happens is the forward and back mounts that craddle the cam break. so the side cover was junk, as was the block. everything else was fine, i guess...

Reckon a stuck valve could have caused the break or helped it along. Or simple fatigue of casting. Burnished mating surfaces would indicate motor ran or was trying to start for awhile. I have seen motors run with broken cams and broken cranks for quite some time before someone took pity on them and shut them down for inspection. Cam bore centerline is probably off once cam breaks. Lots of banging around in there likely ruined block as well

That's odd! Never saw a H break a cam, but have seen a few V's break. The V has a oil pump eccentric, and would break there. No damage to the block, they were no starts.
