HS40 Sidecover/C-clip removal without destroying oil seal?

Well I really F'd the dog... I finally got my motor back together, got everything buttoned up and secure and I put the effing oil scraper in backwards. So now I have to take the motor apart :mad2: It usually wouldn't be a problem but I already pressed on the oil seal and I have no idea where to get another one if I ruin it. Luckily I got it off the first time beating the hell out of it and not ruining the seal but now that it has all brand new parts I don't want to do that again. Here's the seal I'm talking about:






So any good advice on how to get the C-clip off without ruining the oil seal? Or if you know where to get another someone let me know, the part number is "518867" and there's a "C/L" at the bottom

i use a harmonic balancer puller and it pulls the entire cover off i know it isnt good for the bearing but it comes off pretty easy i just did mine yesterday night i dont fool with tecumsehs so i didnt know why the cover wouldnt come off so i used the puller it came right off pretty easy i have a question for you are the washers on the keeper bolt for the bearing flat of bent? im assuming flat and they bent when i pulled it off if you can send a pm and let me know

The washers on the screws were slightly bent.


I'm hoping to avoid doing what your doing unless its a last resort. I'd rather buy a new seal if someone knows where I can get one...

Unfortunately for you the seal is considered expendable. I've done the same thing. Your local small engine shop should have them available. How do you know if your scraper is on wrong? On mine, if it was installed wrong the crank wouldn't turn. Is this a Rupp engine?

If you turn it by hand, it hits the case and stops turning. I'm almost 99% sure its the scraper but we'll see when I open it up.

Are you sure that's the same seal that is pictured? I'm going to try and find it locally since they want $8.00 shipping for a $4.00 part :angry:

If you can't find the seal, local. I would "part" no pun intended, with one for $8.00 mailed 1st. class. That maybe high? I have some n.o.s Tecumseh seal and really don't want to sell them but I would if you get in a bind.

I would not consider trying to pull the cover as mentioned above. Covers are $45- when it gets broke.

Well I went to pick it up locally and nobody could find anything for P/N "518867" and "27897" is not the same seal.

If anyone can tell me what the full engine number for this motor is? The shroud with the engine was missing when I got it and that may help me locate the right seal. Or if anyone has the correct part number for this seal, I'd appreciate it.

Could you give me the part number off that seal or at least post a picture of it with a tape measure so I can make sure its the same thing?

#28540 is the seal you need. The "5" number you mentioned is a C/R number. They where one of a few suppliers to Tecumseh. But Tec's number is the 28540

There are only 2 HS40 PTO seals. 27897 is the NON roller bearing crank seal and as Randy stated 28540 is the roller bearing seal. Trust Us.

Well I bought a seal off of Randy cause nobody has one around me. I see the SKF bearing bought out Chicago Rawhide (C/R) so they probably have a part number that will work. The purchasing guy at work gets back next week so I'll have him find the new SKF part number for this seal. This way if anyone else in the future is looking for this seal they'll have more options.
