Hello. I bought these items about a year or so ago and never got around to learning about them...until now. What changed? I traded an old motorcycle for a running 6.5HP pre-predator Harbor Freight motor and cool old control line airplane.

So...as I do research into what I need to put this together and have some fun, what would I call this frame in my google searches? Also, any suggestions for stuff I can get which will help me put together a decent general purpose weekend rider would be very appreciated.

The front wheel in these pics has disappeared under all the crap on my back storage area, but hopefully I'll find it after some digging. If not, I'll need to source a new one. Also, front fork, some mechanism for getting power to the back wheel, brake parts, control parts, seat, and various other bits and bobs I don't know about yet.

Thanks!

Baja Motorsports (defunct) Doodle Bug (red), Dirt Bug (yellow), Racer (lime green), but all generally referred to as Doodle Bugs or DBs. Yours is the earlier (better, IMO) frame (there was a weird later frame design) and is a great starter bike.

The Baja Motorsports site is still online.

This may help you figure out what is missing (diagrams aren't great, though).

If I needed a fork for DB, I'd probably get this.

A Coleman CT100U or Mega Moto MM-B80/MM-B105 front wheel should work, you may need to play with spacer lengths to center in fork.

I believe OldMiniBikes still has front wheels, it’s the rear wheel that’s hard to find, yours is a disc brake model, should have the VIN prefix of LUAH. The stock bolts get broke off the brake disc and sprocket and are sometimes a pain to get out, do what you can to save your rear wheel as they are hard to find and many other wheels look the same but the spacings are different. Go Power Sports has/had seats for $25 and the suspension forks at OldMiniBikes Warehouse are a nice upgrade. I found 6 ply SunF tires on eBay that are like the original 4 ply but cheaper. There’s lots of upgrades and info on the forum for Doodlebugs (DB30S).

The info I've gotten here has been very helpful - I'm gathering parts and should have this together within a month or two.

One thing I'm having a lot of difficulty finding is the DB30S-175 rear axle bolt, described as "BOLT M12-1.25X245, FLANGE (PT)" in the parts list. I'm going to call some specialty fastener places tomorrow (they're all closed today) but if anyone has a lead on this item, that would be very helpful.

Much appreciated!

Try Monster Moto/Mega Moto, Coleman, Motovox. Just about all the Chinese brands are close to the same size. Keep in mind, it doesn't have to be a rear axle, just one that fits, One brands front may be the same as another brands rear.

I just got a 255mm M12 with 1/25 pitch and we'll see if I can adapt it.

Now I need some bushing: DB30s-184 or 203 or 215 (green, yellow and red) right rear wheel bushing. Also the center bushing for the rear wheel part # DB30S-178.

I'm not averse to making these if needed, but if I can just buy one, that would be faster. :)

OldMiniBikes Warehouse has a lot of Baja parts, some may not have the same part number from model to model as they have changed their numbering system. Sears parts direct does have some parts but their inventory isn't up to date, they still had frames listed that they don't have!. Lots of these parts look the same but are just different enough not to work. It seems as the lawsuits pile up, the companies change names and the designs just enough to keep selling stuff. Everyone says " Buy a Doodlebug, there's a million of them out there and they're easy to get parts for ", not so much anymore.

OldMiniBikes Warehouse is where I got found most of the stuff I've ordered. They're out of the ones I mentioned above. It'll take a while for me to be able to start assembling the bike, so maybe they'll be back in stock soon. I'll check back.

Any ideas on where I can get tubing that I can cut down to make DB30s-178 (rear center bushing - the one that goes between the bearings)? The parts PDF says "DB30S-178 BUSHING F13?F18?162" which I think means 13mm ID x 18mm OD x 162mm length but just guessing.

I got what seems perfect tubing for bushings: 3/4" OD and 1/2" ID 2' long. http://www.protofab.com/5DOM.html SKU 075122. Kind of steep at $20, but for two feet I can make quite a few bushings with it, and the wall thickness seems perfect for butting up against the inner races of the wheel bearings. I bought it at a place calle McFadden-Dale - they may only be local to California.
