Is this where the blown Harbor Freight motors end up

Actually, many of these engines are shipped with problems, some major, but most minor. Returned engines get sold by the pallet "as is". These guys probably buy them and do the repairs for resale. I bought a few from some guy that goes to Harbor Freight auctions, and does this very same thing.

Just a head's up:
I can tell you from personal experience that some HF 6.5 engines that are "returns" get reboxed and put out on the shelf again!:hammer: We purchased a HF blue "Greyhound" 6.5 HP about a year and a half ago that would not run right. When I returned it for an exchange I asked if these engines get reboxed and set out on the shelf again (they emphatically claimed no). I was suspicious of the engine I had just exchanged for so I opened it up on the tailgate of my truck right in the HF parking lot- sure enough, it was obvious that it had already been sold, opened, and TRIED TO RUN, and RE-BOXED! :hammer:I had to exchange it for yet another one which turned out to be O.K, and is still in use on one of our bikes today.

What kind of problems?

Hi Folks,

I saw a sizable number of visitors coming from this thread and figured I'd come check it out.

We do indeed buy Harbor Freight returns as-is by the truckload. We get some that are like new, some that look like they've been a boat anchor for a while, and everything in between. Most of the time the engine just has carburetor trouble or something simple wrong with it that we can fix with a quick parts replacement or adjustment. If it's major, the engine is scrapped. If the engine looks like crap, it's scrapped or sold locally to people who buy our engines that need more work hours than we're willing to spend. Engines sold on our website are all in good running condition and any major cosmetic problems it may have had are fixed (for example, if the engine's gas tank was smashed we'd replace it - we're not interested in sending anyone a damaged unit even if it works fine... anything beyond scratches or small dings are sold elsewhere or used for parts.)

We're not a large company - when someone has an issue we work hard to take care of them. We've sold several truckloads worth of power equipment and I can honestly say that we don't have to deal with many returns or items that need repair - and when we do run into one we make sure to take care of it. (I think the last couple items we had an issue with was actually freight damage - UPS around Christmas time is even less careful than usual.)

That's who we are and what we do - if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them. But we certainly don't sell anyone blown up engines!

Can I come to your place and pick things up? Since I am in Massachusetts it would make more sense than shipping. Also if someone from this group actually sees your operation and has a positive experience I am sure it would go a long way to help you sell hundreds if not thousands of these motors. And other items. Just look at the membership on this site. It is crazy how many engines we buy as a group. I run the Harbor Freight engines and love them like many on this site.

A scratch and dent sale would go over very well I would think! We like having cheap parts to mod. You would very possibly make our hobby much cheaper Justin.

It's not just engines. I bought an ultrasonic cleaner recently. Made the mistake of getting home before I opened it... all covered in oily film, smelled of carb cleaner, and the power cord was missing.

Someone at HF opened that return, and put it back on the shelf for the next guy.

I open EVERYTHING in the parking lot now before I leave.

I saw a CL add yesterday, this guy was trying to sell a "almost new Predator 212" for $120. I started to call and tell him, dude you can buy a new one with warranty for $99. Somebody will probably buy it! :pimp:

Absolutely Gumpit. You would be going to our repair shop - we don't have a brick and mortar store, we have a warehouse and repair shop. I deal with everything online - someone else deals with the actual repair and selling of units (Glen). You can go through me to set up a time or give him a call (our number is on the website, I don't want to post any info here as I'm not familiar with your forum rules yet and don't want to infringe.)
