late night Rupp sprint find

I found a Rupp sprint stashed away in the barter section of Craigslist this weekend. After a bit of emailing back and forth I got the ok to come and get today. Of course I had someone coming to buy a vintage camper from me so I had to wait for that so I could not run up till this evening.

Just now got back from a Run up to Tampa to get it, Rolled in at 10pm

It has all the typical redneck mods, failed attemp at stuffing a honda pressure washer motor in it, thumb throttle setup (unfinished and missing pieces of course), "cant get your foot on the right side cause of that thar honda motor? Hell son just cut that diggity dang ol thang off and weld some barstock to length on there! :doah:

All I really cared about was the wheels and the sprint specific parts that were on there anyway, Luckily that stuff isn't too bad, no chainguard but there is at least part of the chain tensioner thingy on there. Oh and the tank does have a couple of dings, but the inside looks like brand new so thats a bonus as well!

Gotta get a better look in the daylight but I think the original Rupp marked tire on the front is actually in pretty nice condition

Nice find Marcus! I have two myself that are on the project list. Did you see the one that popped on ebay tonight? It has the chain guard. These bikes are hard to find parts for on certain items. But when finished they are cool looking little bikes. I have a source for some nos parts. If you decide to rebuild and your looking for something and can't find it let me know. I'll see if I can come up with it. I bought alot of nos parts still sealed it their packages. I have breakdowns and part numbers with descriptions also.

jmb Unfortunatly with its pretty trashed for me to redo, the frame looks straight but the barstock footpeg fiasco going on does not help things. Although its looks like you could get away with sliding an original over it and blend it well. It is an early, it has the headtube support welded in like sensation bikes had.

The other bummer is the the front forks are pretty beat. they were hit and straightened out and hammered a bit.

I'm still trying to decide if I like the little wheels on this bike, I kinda do because it is a little out of the norm for these. thought about using my scrambler and transplant the sprint specific (minus the forks) over?? Not much buying/intrest in higher priced restored bikes right now so its just gonna sit around till economy perks up anyway:

I dig the gc honda motor in those bikes.
it looks old school because of the upright cylinder design.
Is there a clutch that will work on these? It has a fat and short snout on the crankshaft. I do kinda dig that the exhaust is in the front, it would look kinda cool with a custom bent pipe coming around it.

If you decide to cut it loose and part it out I need a front fender. But if you decide to rebuild it I have a set of forks and legs for it including other items. What is the production number if the sticker is still under the seat?

I didnt realize that was the shorty crank version. You could always put the clutch on the jackshaft and the sprocket on the motor (run it in backwards order). The factory rupp clutch had a sleeve made of tool steel that would definately hold up, you just need a wicked long grade 8 bolt.
Here is a pic of someone else on this board using a similar motor.


He has the cool exhaust like you were talking of. I dont know how long his crank was But I know they do make a crank that is 3/4"D x2-5/16"L. Here is the link :

JMB I'll let you know, I stripped it down this week, tossed some of the junk parts etc.. I am half tempted to convert my scrambler but I have so many other bikes needing worked on that it would just put me too far behind.

Oh yea, the frame id is C-128241 can you decifer the vins? I deemed this one early because the extra headtube support, which is what is shown in the 1970 brochure for all the bikes but later dropped.

you know the funny thing about that. i seen that bike on CL with some other stuff asked how much he wanted. he told me 200 WITHOUT THE MOTOR. i said no thanks makes me mad i knew what it was to!

Yea when I emailed my offer he countered with $200, I simply declined an told him I have cash in hand and will pay only what I offered if he changes his mind....got an email from him the next day telling me to come and get it :wink: Had the fork uppers been better and the footpeg not altered, I would have done pretty good. But with that stuff damaged I just did alright.

I don't know how to decifer the vin's if their is anything to decifer. But from what I have been told is the C stands for seventy that's it. And the numbers that follow are just production count. My two bikes are later frames without the headtube support. The headtube supports I never noticed that in my brochure before till you mentioned it but I knew about the bikes having them in early production. I heard the later seventy and on bikes are made with chromemoly tubing also. My production numbers are C-133113, C-164359.
