lathe fun

i went to local metal supply house to pick up some stock to putz around
with on the lathe. a few projects needed small parts so here is what i did:

1 - picked up 12' of 3/8" hot rolled hex stock because i needed to make a
throttle cable clamp and a cable guide for my Winber Ride. last year i was
sidelined by a bad throttle cable, no parade for me. that was frustration
enough but when i found a new cable a lack of tools killed any hope of
making the tail end of the parade. the biggest problem was getting a screw
driver under the throttle setup to tighten the cable clamp. no dice.
removing the lever wasn't an option due to lack of tools. so i came up
with a cable clamp that used a 5/16" socket or box wrench and a pliers
or 3/8" open end to tighten the clamp and cable. fastenal had the 5/16"
10-32 dimple head hex screws in stock so i scored a bag of 100 along with
100 #10 internal star lock washers.

2 - out in the stock room they had a 46" piece of 1-3/4" marine brass
round stock they were looking to get rid of. major score here, $80 for the
piece. here is a piece i cut off just keep on my desk. the guy handed me
the piece and i almost dropped it, it has some serious weight. its a nice
piece of metal.

3 - lastly a post to hold the throttle cable is needed. even though a
spring will be placed coaxially over the cable between the post and
throttle cable clamp a means to prevent the cable sheath from popping
out is needed. so this almost finished piece will guide the cable
and allow a screw to clamp the sheath to the post. still missing are
the center bores and threads to hold the post to the throttle plate
and the other to clamp the cable sheath. i might have to redo this entire
thing so the throttle cable doesnt stick out sideways on the bike if
it can't be bent in a tight radius.

Nice Phil.
Must be a pleasure to be drinking coffee in the morning and going to work for yourself instead of the man.
