max torque clutch

#1
Ok, so I have a clone that is modded to roughly 8HP and it bent the steel backing plate for my TAV which is throwing the belt out of alignment. I cannot fit the TAV2 on the frame with this engine as it is a bonanza and the JS mounts are in the way (don't want to cut the frame up). I am wondering if I switch to a clutch how long it would last riding on moderately hilly (nothing real steep) terrain but somewhat groomed (no mud or anything like that). Any thoughts guys?

yup and while your at it weld the bearing holder to the plate and weld some bracing to triangulate it back to the plate. take the bearings out first so you dont melt them

A centrifugal clutch will hold up fine for what you describe, but I'd try to repair/reinforce the TAV rather than go to a fixed ratio.

The el cheapo chinese centrifugal lasted all summer for me, and it was used in extremely hilly terrain with lots of mud/sand/water. After well over 500 miles of use(about half of that was easy road cruising), it was about done and one spring was broken.

Ah! Strigoi totally called me out. I forgot to mention the max torque clutch. I have a brand new one and I was considering just throwing that on instead of messing with modifying the TAV. HOWEVER, I think I just thought of a way that I can modify the TAV 2 backplate to make it fit without stripping it of its structural integrity. That would hold up better as I do not have a welder or welder friends to reinforce the steel backing plate that the TAV came with. I will post pictures of what I am thinking and will be curious to see if you guys think it is an acceptable alternative.

just flat stock. Would of been easier as a two bolt set-up around the bearing housing like an edger has for the blade guard. Dont know the strength of the idea. but I did not want the plate to twist like yours. your backing plate is junk. I would buy a new one. you could allways sell the tav to me. If so pm me.
