Mustang Trail Machine

Here's what I brought home tonight. It was made by the Mustang motorcycle company, they just called it the "trail machine" - it was Mustang's answer to the Tote Gote. It originally had a 5 3/4 HP Briggs & Stratton mated to a three speed manual transmission with a kick starter. (This picture isn't mine, it's from the ad, I'll get more pictures of it as it progresses.)

recoil, it must be. there is no recoil rope on the engine. motra very cool machine(minibike) finding the correct engine won't be to hard, but the gear box with the kick starter might be:doah: never new mustang built a trail bike. looks to be very hard to find one. mustang made a full size bike and a scooter type bike like the cushman scooter. here is a picture of a mustang scooter.

check out the dual pipes (2stroke engine)

The transmission is a British built Burman motorcycle transmission that's geared directly to the B&S engine, so yes it is only a kick start machine. I was planning on cutting off the trans brackets and running a Comet torque converter but I might find out if I could track down a transmission before I start cutting.

Cool machine:thumbsup: From the right, the transmission looks like a Norton or pre-unit Triumph, just smaller. Maybe one from a smaller Triumph would bolt in. How did the clutch work on these?

The Rokon had a kick start on the Abilon transmission on the Trail Breaker Mach III and the Chrysler West Bend 820 engine was fitted with a one way centrifugal clutch so that the kick starter or the rope starter both would work. I had an acquaintance here in Portland who had many Mustangs and at least two of the Trail bikes. Before I cut I would do some checking around the parts may be worth a whole lot more than you can imagine. The Mustang club should be contacted for pars sources.

When the transmission supplier quit making transmissions Mustang and a couple of others stopped making bikes. That was my understanding way back when Mustang ceased production. Most of their customers [BSA, Matchless, AJS and etc] started making 'unit construction engines'. Steven probably has it right. Don't hack on that frame it's worth too much loot to someone else.

Is it possible for me to get a scan of this ad? (larger then the image that is posted in the gallery)
I'm gathering info for the restoration project and this would be a huge help!
OR.... what publication was this ad posted in? I have thousands of motorcycle magazines and I may already have this advertising page amongst my collection of magazines.

Here's an original ad.

not sure if it's the same "Mustang". the mowers were made by Mowett in Odessa MO. they came in 5,7,and 8 HP models. the # on the grille was in reference to the HP... hard plastic tires. pneumatic tires were an upgrade. they are built like a push mower with a seat and steering. here is mine before and after restoration. it's just the right size for my 4 year old to drive.
