I want do some tire swapping on some spoke wheels, easily doable here in the garage or is this best left to the "pros"? I don't have any tire tools except for a plastic set for a bicycle, and I doubt they are gonna cut the mustard! Is it worth buying some tools?

Come on Guys, I broken tires down in the drive, I can do it with 2 large screwdrivers, Just got to get that "Bead", Broke, then you keep it towards the inside of the shallow part of the rim, ya kind of "button hole" the rim out of the tire, a little at a time, the hardest part is getting the darned thing to stay still , but if that's a "problem", tighten your axel in a vise and slide the tire and wheel down over it, some times you can break the bead with your fingers, pintching the sidewalls, most the time just a little prying persuation, with some spoons or large screwdrivers, being carefull not to damage the seal or the sidewalls, some times some dish soap will aid in slicking things up, and aid in putting on the new tire, good luck, and save a buck.

On non motorcycle type rims/tires, it ain't worth the hassle vs $5!

Screwdrivers cause damage to the rim and tire , I have the proper bars but it's still worth $5 to have it done and if the rims are rusty inside it's WELL WORTH $5!!!!!!. I haven't made $5 and hour since I was 12 years old :thefinger:

Man I WISH I could find someone to remove tires round here for $5!!!! Last time I had some removed (auto not moto) cheapest was $10, for a few seconds at the machine:thefinger: My buddy is turning wrenches again at a dealership so He's done a couple for me on the "down low" since them thankfully though.

Seals on theses tires are all free, I got 4 to do, I may just mess with one for the heck of it. Unless my buddy can do it with an automotive tire machine???

get some tire spoons or you can use really dull screwdrivers. take the valve core out so you have less chance of pinching the tube. just gotta push the tire down to the narrow part of the rim and work it around. My brother even works at a shop but i dont bother. Sometimes i even change car tires by hand :eek:ut:

get some tire spoons...
Agreed! Get some decent tire irons. They never wear out. Even the best ones aren't very expensive. It's the sort of tool that actually does pay for itself after awhile if the only other choice is going to the tire shop. If you get the inexpensive steel type, file any burrs or sharp edges off of the business end before using.
