Powell Challenger

Hi- Can someone explain the differences (and how they work) between the Powell Challengers with the totally automatic torque converter (no shift lever other than the lever to switch to neutral- is that what that lever is for???), and the levers that move the entire engine. I have seen the lever with just four positions and one with multiple (14 or so) positions. What are the advantages of the different types and which type is the most/least common? Thanks for any help!-- Jay
