Pull start won’t come off

My recoil rope won’t retract so I removed the three bolts to take the recoil assembly off and something is causing it to get hung up. I have tried everything and can’t get it to come off. Any ideas?

It might be that the central pawls that engage the starter cup are stuck out. Maybe try tapping on the center with a mallet to see if you can knock them loose to retract.

I’ve taken the bolts off but will try once I’m back home thanks

Remove spark plug wire. Remove clutch cover. Rotate crankshaft. If crank is hard to turn. Remove spark plug to relieve engine compression. You may find rotating engine with starter bolts removed frees up starter. Try that before major surgery or breaking stuff.
