QA50K1 won't start

IF you have all these items it should run. Hit it with some starting fluid. Odds are it is a fuel issue. You obviousely do NOT have one or all of the above mentioned. If it was stored for years unless you drained the carb completely you can bet it is gummed up. Good Luck!!

forgive my ignorance, what is starting fluid? you mean like carby cleaner?
Go to the auto parts store and find the spray chemical aisle (my favorite!). There, you will find cans labled "starting fluid". You spray it down the carb throat while cranking the engine. It smells like ether and is highly flamable. A backfire at that moment could cost you your eyebrows if you're not careful.

You mentioned having spark, fuel and compression. How do you know it's getting fuel? Is the spark plug wet? If you've got spark, but the plug's wet, that points to not enough air or too much fuel as possible problems. Is that old foam air filter petrified into a brick? Is the float stuck? Did you swap out the old fuel? This is a two-stroke, right?

Starting fluid, also known as Ether,is sprayed into an engines intake. It's EXTREMLY volitile.Because of that it helps start an engine by igniting far more easily than gas,but if overused it can damage the engine.

You're quick,Tom.I was posting the same time you were. You beat me to it.

Something about highly volitile, highly flammable aerosol products gets me all excited. I just bought one of those propane flamethrowers/week burners at Harbor Freight Tools - it is so fun, but not quite the right item for starting that old mini.

thanks guys much appreciate you help,

Tom S mentions something about a wet spark plug, well yes the spark plug is wet each time i have taken it out to inspect it. how do i make sure the carby gets more air? will a blast of starting fluid help clean out the carby at the same time?

the foam filter had all but deterioated and some of it may have gone into the carby, hahahaha.

yes it is a four stroke.

it was pointed out that how do i know its getting fuel well if the spark plug is wet this would mean that fuel is passing through the carby right?

any further advice is much needed.

Isn't that one of those imports that led to the down fall of our beloved mini, I never liked them things , take it back to the barn you found it in and leave it sit for another 30 some years.

Dave i appreciate those with bikes like mine may not be welcome on this site and i apologise if i have offended users by joining this forum knowing that my bike aint an old school mini bike. i should however say that where i come from the QA50 is symbolic of a time in the 70's when one had many freedoms and life was sweet. this bike if you like is one of our links with those times, so the more people that try and preserve them the better i reckon, it might be imported but she is pure 1970's.

Tom i tried the starting fluid it worked a treat, after just 3 squirts she fired up. this no brings me to my next question if anyone can help. when i give throttle drops in revs and virtually konks out why would this be?

thanks guys

AWWWWWWW shucks, I was just pulling your chain, didn't mean to make ya feel uncomfortable, you probable still got some gum in the carb, the reed is sticking still, keep running it and it may open up or you may have to open up the carb and clean it out real good, good luck and welcome!
