Rounded Blower Housing - HS40 - Modifications

#23
OK, I guess it's time for me to chime in here, since this thread turned into a train wreck! If anyone would have looked at your 2nd picture in your initial posting, they would have seen the 3-prong lighting stator plug sticking out of the front of the engine. The good news is you have the correct round top 72 blower housing for the aluminum lighting flywheel with the studs and not screws to mount the recoil. The flywheel number you need is a 610769A or a 610869 from the 2-stroke AH817MB engine. Both of these flywheels have 12 magnets. The tapers are the same and so is the fin configuration. A 30755 number lighting flywheel is for the early H50 - H70 medium frame engines. The bad news is these flywheels are super hard to find. I may have one, but it's not $60 like a 32517. I hope this clears things up. Good Luck in your search.
Bob, thanks for setting me up with the flywheel I need!

@bobco Thank you Bob for setting me up with a nice shiny flywheel. I am putting it all back together with my new flywheel housing and running into fitment issues around the backing plate. All holes line up but can't get the bottom of the housing over the backing plate all the way. Do I need a different backing plate or do I need to bend the backing plate I have a bit to fit. Thank you! IMG_1901.jpeg

Yes, that blower housing backing plate may give you some fitment issues at the bottom since it is designed for the square top housing. I'll dig up a picture of the backing plate you need. You could try loosening the engine from the frame some to allow the bottom of your new housing to slip over easier? After looking at these two, the later one is a bit wider at the lower blower housing mounting bolts, or maybe the front mount, by about roughly 1/8". This could be your interference?

Hi Bob! Yes, that is where the clearance issue is, bottom and lower right.

Yes, the air gap on these is pretty tight, and filing a little won't hurt anything. As you can see too from your picture, most of these laminations aren't perfectly aligned.

I am sure. I can slip on the blower housing and its not fitting on the right side. See photo.
