So....how much play?

I have a HS50 that I am working on for my Fox Sundowner project. I took the head off...it was very clean. The piston was very tight in the bore.

However when I was sliding the clutch on I notice a little bit of end play in the crank. Maybe 1/8"....certainly not a lot but it had a little wiggle.

This normal? Something to be concerned with?

If it is a factory built Recreation HS50 (they were all ball bearing sidecover engines in that size/horsepower) then yes it is something to be concerned with. They should have no more than .005 endplay, if they have slop something is VERY wrong. If its a "GOOD ENOUGH" snowblower engine, with a bushing crankshaft, it should fall with .005-.027"
