I’ll use either one indiscriminately, lol. However, some vintage bikes, a flathead is all that’ll fit, and that’s what you’ll have to use. I save my FH engines for those for the most part, and those FH engines will be Tecumseh (mostly get them off snowblowers). Interestingly, I have put vintage flatheads on Chinese minis as well, lol…

Agree old snowblowers are good engines to convert to mini bikes. Most have low hours especially in states where they might have one or two snow storms a year. I look for old 70's Ariens. They usually have an H50, HS40 or HS50

And a pox on the plague of Predators everywhere.
Have seen a few attempts at “backdating” a Predator/Clone/Honda OHV by eliminating the awful square blobs (box muffler and box airbox) at the rear plus the equally unsightly fuel tank and painting the bare aluminum block white or red or something. Predators look more like a food processor than an engine. The cylinder type fuel tanks help a lot as well.

I like the idea of cheap engines and bikes bringing new members to mini bike hobby.
Owners of vintage mini bikes can do as they please with their bikes, but my opinion is a vintage bike should have a vintage motor. It turns my stomach when these fools install a clone engine on a vintage machine but it’s only fair to realize some folks don’t have the skill or budget to source, repair or restore a vintage motor. Using these cheap clone motors allows these folks to enjoy our silly hobby within their budget or ability limitations, but it does not excuse their poor choice or exempt them from purists scorn.
