Speedway Superstar

#1
Hi Guys,

I picked this up a few weeks ago in MI. I understand its a vary rare bike, what do you guys know about it. What engine should it have, and what colors were available for it. Someone said there were only 10 made, is that correct?

Eventually, I'm going to restore it, but I'm going to do another one first to learn the ropes. Any advice, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.
The tank has 1-2 small holes and need to be repaired. Other than that I was going to have it sandblasted and painted. Should I powder coat this or use more factory paint process. What type of paint should I use?

Thanks
Frank

Thanks guys, but I think this is the original tank. As someone poster on this site, the tank may be the same as the '68 and '69 Rupp bikes, but it came painted with the Superstar instead of chrome as with many of the early Rupps. The frame may be same as another Speedway, but with the back flat and the Rupp tank.

ITS A SPEEDWAY SUPERSTAR WITH ORIGINAL TANK,

you guys dont know this but Speedway was started by ex- Rupp employes! this was the first modle offered by speedway in 69 and did use the same rupp tank as the tt500 or roadster or goat! the bike in this picture was restored to better than new condition and i was told there was less than 10 made. YOURS FRANK LOOKS LIKE IT WAS ORIGINALLY BLUE!!!

Frankster: You have a very rare bike. I restored the red one that is shown above. When I first got the bike, I thought it was a mish-mash of Rupp and Speedway that some previous owner threw together and I bought it because the '69 Rupp gas tanks are worth their weight in gold. However, after some extensive research, I found that Speedway made this model to be marketed through department stores, not dealers. As a company in their infancy, they used some of the suppliers that Rupp used. Hence, the Rupp gas tank. The department store idea never got off the ground with Speedway, and the Superstar model was scrapped after a very small production. Other than mine, I have only encountered one other complete bike and two junk frames. But, I did get a parts diagram for the bike including a picture of the bike showing that gas tank and the rear grab bar part of the frame, which is correct for that bike, but different on all other Speedway models. The Superstar only came in blue. I elected to restore mine correctly except for the color, the rear sprocket, and I painted the outer rims black. The original rear spocket was huge and would climb a tree but had no top end speed. This is a really comfortable bike to ride and I'm sure you'll enjoy it once your finished.
