Starting old school go fast build....

#1
Decided its time to build a minibike and wanted to log the build. Just starting the project so its a good time to document it. My goal is to get a wheelie on launch and still pull a 60-70mph number. Im not having any luck getting pics in here, have uploaded 3 but cant seem to attach, maybe they'll show up, maybe not! Any help with that would be cool!

After alot of engine research, some good advice from members here, and constant peeks into my wallet for ANYTHING I may have stashed, I went with a Briggs LO206 purchased from Baker Racing Engines to power the build. The mill was $500, and will need an air filter and exhaust pipe. It dyno's in at 9.5 HP, great power to weight ratio too.

Now with engine home theres a few items to attend to. First on the list is a pulse fitting. You can buy one or make something yourself, I chose to make one, its in the pics if they make it here. Buying one is easier!!

Now you can plumb the fuel pump with 1/4" hose and add a couple drops of superglue to the brass breather on top of the fuel pump. That will keep oil from puddling on the pump.

Not ready to fire the engine yet and just ordered the frame so hopefully I can do pics by the time I get the frame. I suck at computer stuff!!
Here goes...:scooter:

Pics worked.
That will be a screamer. What frame did ya order?
Norwalk,as in home of the Truckers and Norwalk Dragway?
Spent a bunch of time there.

Yep, home of the Truckers, you got it! Thank God for the dragstrip, otherwise its a no fun zone.

I procrastinated for a couple weeks on the frame. Wanted the new Taco 22 but is too expensive at $375. Looked at a few others and finally decided on the Azusa frame with straight handlebars. Cost was $174 with shipping, not a bad deal really. I think I'll have to spread the rear frame rails some, I plan to run a live axle with a 6" slick and may need some room!

So when were you in Norwalk?? Were you glad to leave?? LOL

I grew up in Tiffin.
Played football against Norwalk.
Also went to the drags regularly in the 70's then again in the late 80's.
Nice build.

You said your engine is a LO206, but your pic shows the Animal sticker. Which one is it? Some ppl say LO206 (local option) when they mean Animal. If it is indeed a LO206, why didn't you just buy an Animal? The LO206 is a sealed, spec class motor with a rev limiter in the PVL.

Thanks Buckeye. I moved here in '87, got kids here.

The LO206 IS an Animal, only diff is the LO has a pull starter and the rev limiter in the LO is set at 6100 where the animal has one set for 7100. They are all based off the same 124432 series engine. Buy an animal rev limiter for the LO and it becomes the "animal" you mentioned. The World Formula has a 12,100 rev limiter, a billet rod, and not really sure what else, honestly. Once I found performance upgrades for the 'legal' engine, I wasnt so worried about never being able to improve it. Let me see if I can get a shot of the other stickers on the motor posted....

Just got word that the frame I ordered is out of stock for about a week so I wont see it for probably 2 weeks...:eek:hmy:

Pics of stickers aren't necessary. Didn't mean to start anything. Just figured the Animal would be cheaper since it isn't hand picked parts and sealed up like the LO206. You got the rev limiter stuff backwards. The World Formula is limited to 7100 rpm. It has approx .308" lift cam in it. Animal is I think .250" ish lift and essentially has no rev limiter (12100 rpm). The World Formula rod is said to be as good if not better than an ARC one.

To your benefit, the LO206 appears to have slightly higher compression. 8.5:1 vs. 9:1

You're cool, I may have goofed up my notes on the rev limiter numbers, thanks for correcting. I have also heard that about the WF rod, it really looks like a nice piece! Im not very familiar with a 'squeeze cast' rod, but they seem to hold up alright below 7200rpm. Wow, .305 lift cam...

Basically just wanted an engine I dont have to buy or build a starter for, but later on I might!! The sticker on the recoil housing must have changed, it doesnt say local option, mine says 206 crate engine and has an animal emblem. New look?

You know I can't blame you on that. Your first build (engine) can be intimidating. But when it fires up for the first time and you get all the bugs worked out, its a pretty good feeling.

Seems like the smaller the engine is, the more important it is to wring every ounce of energy out of it...without grenading it!! Ive been using 2-strokes for my builds cuz they're free...ya always see a Toro snowblower in the trash around these parts. lol Was playing around with nitro on the pocket rocket and forgot the 30% rule for 2-strokes, it handled 40% ok, made a blazing pass up the street, but after the 50% run I heard the seals sizzling like bacon! No prob, now good as new and only $4 in parts!! Good to get back into 4-stroke stuff, alot has changed since the old flatheads! Cool to see automotive style OHV valvetrains in these little motors. Much easier to make power....

The Azusa 3545 frame is finally here after being backordered. There seem to be several diagrams of this frame from site to site, some show motor slots on left, some on right. Some have straight handlebars, others are bent, so I had no idea what was coming! They all have bent handlebars now.

First pic is stock frame...dont like the lines....lets fix it.

Second pic has reworked fork and the rear of the frame has been widened 2". The rear axle weldments, brake stop, and rear seat plate have been cut off.
The motor plate was also reworked to center the motor.

More later.....thanks for lookin.

NICE TO SEE SOMEONE USING AN ANIMAL INSTEAD OF ALL THE PREDATORS.
OUR KART CLUB RUNS A 206 CLASS AND THE ENGINES ARE BAD:asshole: I RAN ONE OF MY BUDS KARTS WITH ONE AND WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE TORQUE.ON OUR TRACK THEY WILL KEEP UP WITH THE KT100'S IN THE TIGHT SECTIONS.

Everyone's had good things to say about the LO, I think Im gonna like this engine!

I know a guy that builds kart motors. I showed him the max torque clutch and Comet 2-speed jackshaft arrangement I planned to run and he got a worried look on his face, then turned me on to a titan clutch thats made for this motor. I'll use the 2-speed stuff for something a bit milder.

Let the mock up begin.....:grind:

Heres some more pics:

So I was gonna use a slotted 1/2 thick alum plate under the motor to mount jackshaft on. Having ditched the jackshaft, I cut the plate down to fit the motor plate on frame, drilled the bolt pattern from the motor,(3 3/8 x 6 1/8), and will use it to strengthen the thin motor plate on frame.

Now we gotta get some wheels on this thing so I can roll it around, its gettin heavy! Widening the rear section rendered the stock axle mounts useless so Im installing a 1" live axle assy. Pic shows axle in place, it runs true and level with frame and measures equally on both sides to the axle holes in front fork. Will weld the brg hangers tomorrow at work...if I dont get busted by the boss! Im gonna need a 12" tall rear tire and a 10" tall front to achieve a level ride heigth of 31/2" and seat heigth of 23". More to come....

This build looks like its going to be a little track monster i want to build a drag bike but there is nowhere here to ride one and i may be wrong but i think you loaded the wrong pictures unless you meant to put some animals on there. Nice picture of the lion and eagle tho.

Which 'animal'? lol The one in the frame or the critters! That was a trip with my daughter to Akron Zoo last Fathers Day. The Eagle was hit by a car and rescued but one wing was beyond repair. Still a big beautiful bird....

Really just waitin on a twist grip and cable then I can fire the motor and see how she sounds with the Robertson pipe...otta be loud and throaty! No mods to the motor done yet, gonna run it box stock and get a base set of #s to build off.

Mounting a round gas tank to tapering frame is a pain....

A guy could build another minibike for the cost of shipping too!! When I find something online I want, I try to peruse their store and get as many items into that box as I can, but still paying out the :asshole:.

Im lucky to have a NHRA sanctioned track nearby but I'll be cruisin the streets too. Lots of closed mfg plants round here with huge parking lots to exploit then dash before 5-0 shows up.

Yep, waiting for parts leads to this kind of stuff...lol
