tav2 vs tav30 (stamped steel back)

#1
Besides the tav2 having an aluminum back and the tav30 having the stamped steel back plate is there a difference when it comes to mounting on the 6.5 clone db30?

I see there are subtle installation differences i.e. GTOs set up and cjtminis setup.

I've read in here that as far as specs the two are same just w/ different back plating. Are these really the same or do they have different outputs?

The 30 has more clearance at the head of a clone and is lighter and easy to weld if one one wants. They got a rap for flexing but that would be if you had lots of HP and all you'd have to do is weld some small "L" bar down the sides.

Driver and driven is the same.

Mine sits low with and the engine isn't raised (but it takes mods to do so)

The 30 is cheaper.

Here's what came up with

The 30 is cheaper.

So here’s what came up with so far.

The tav30 has the steel back plate, a smaller profile, maybe lighter and cost less. The back plate can crack or buckle in extreme applications. It can be welded.

The tav2 has the aluminum back plate that can be grind down and when setup correctly it can attain 10% overdrive. The tav2 is bulkier and maybe heavier.

After a good amount of price searching narrowed it down to BMI. According to the BMI phone rep she thought the tav2 had some newer technology behind it.

Well even without the newer technology seems the tav30 is hitting its stride at least at BMI. Their tav30s are out of stock as of today.

They both have overdrive (same driven and driver!) It's just the plate.

The 30 won't crack, if you can't weld you can bolt on for flex but it's not needed unless you got something like 10-12HP. the aluminum 20 is the one made of castings and would be more brittle so they made it bulky/heavy.

I called Comet directly last year with similar questions. Here's what I remember they said:

- The TAV30 and TAV2 are the exact same except for the backing plate like GTO said.
- The TAV30 (steel plate version) is no longer in production, at least as a complete unit.

Also the covers on the TAV30 were nice beefy plastic. The covers for the TAV2 are cheap thin plastic material that cracks super easily.

Seems like the tav30 was the way to go. This would explain why BMI was out but they didn't seem to know production stopped. Thanks zipseattle that greats info.
