Tec H35 issues

I bought this engine for my Rupp Continental restore. It is used and was shipped from several states away via UPS. Seller said it ran great just before boxing it up to ship. I've had it for a couple weeks now and can't get it to start. These are the facts: it has compression, it gets a spark, carb has suction and gets fuel, has new oil and non ethanol gas in it, pistons function as well as valves, valves are NOT stuck, plug is new and gapped correctly, will not respond to starter fluid in the carb or cylinder....sometimes will pop though with starter fluid, choke functions properly, pin in flywheel is not sheared, this engine has no points...its a flat head, keep all these facts in mind because nothing makes sense...no reason why it shouldn't at least run for a couple seconds with starting fluid. What could have happened during shipping? Fuel line is hooked up too. Thanks for all your help with this absolute mystery. :thumbsup:

no points are you sure? the new plug you replaced or was in the engine? He said it ran? He lied, lol

have you pulled the carb and cleaned it yet? if not, that would be the first thing to try. a good cleaning and new carb kit might do the trick!

Pulled the whole carb and cleaned it as well as blew out everyth:shrug:ing w my air compressor. How would a carb kit help if starting fluid has no effect? It should at the very least run for a couple seconds....right? This isn't rhetorical, I'm actually asking. Thanks.

I have had this happen with tecumsehs that are flooded real bad. Usually taking the plug out and letting it sit over night to dry out helps. Did you try giving it a shot of starter fluid into the spark plug hole ? if it won't fire like that there is some sort of problem. Try a new plug first and make sure that the spark is strong enough because a weak spark might not be enough to fire it.

It should with out the carb. with starter fluid. Are you sure the carb isnt flooding it? compression as good as the other engines? no ground wire issues.

right, it should fire up and run when it's primed in the cylinder like that. I have tested engines without a carburetor like that. If it won't fire like that it can only be two things ignition spark and timing or some sort of mechanical problem like low compression, cam timing. I had a 3hp briggs that was real hard to start, it had spark,gas,and compression or so I thought. I turned out that the exhaust valve was burned and even though it had some compression it wasn't enough to fire it up. It would run but you had to pull your arm off and keep priming it to get it. my point is, he may have to really check this engine over to find out whats going on with it.

"getting spark" does not necessarily mean it will spark under compression......

that little spark testing tool Tecumseh used to sell is one of the best tools you could ever own for this scenario..........

The flywheel key does not have to be sheared off to not run , just have marks where it looks like it could be ready to shear and they will not run , I had an H35 that was not sheared but would not start until I replaced it .

I feel like shit for selling this engine to Patrick. He has had issues with it since he got it.
I had it on my Murray last fall and it ran fine, I took it off to put my clone back on it.
I had it running before I boxed it up. I drained all of the fuel and oil out of it, it has got to be something simple.
Any help/advice that you guys can give him would be appreciated!

Pull the top shroud off where the coil is and see if there is a ground wire( coming off the coil) laying in there or if the wire is frayed and is touching something.

You dont need a tool; just lay the wire a few mm away from the plug and pull the cord to see if an arc jumps the gap.

Lastly is this a bell or Diaphram carb?

The one I have is nothing like either one of the two shown. Works good thats what matters. Well back to the engine. Pull the cover and check for a wire sometimes grounding clean the magnet. and hope for the best. Not a carb issue unless its flooding. engine start fluid wont work look elsewhere.
