Tec HS40 Ball Bearing Side Cover Removal - Revisted (With Photos!)

#1
My son is currently restoring a 1970 Rupp Roadster. He was ready to disassemble the engine and inspect the internals in anticipation of a total rebuild. We learned a lot from others (Thank you!) searching previous threads about the "head's up" with the need to first remove the crankshaft circlip hidden under the oil seal before the sidecover can be removed. What I did NOT see in any previous threads (maybe I missed it) were any PHOTOS of the process. It is important to note that the technique shown in the photos (drilling and inserting 2 small sheet metal screws to pry out the oil seal) was NOT our creation. The credit goes to others in previous threads on this subject. Provided for your information in the hope it will help others:

Thank you Michael.

This is great for those who have never done this and it's great for people like me who haven't done it since the pyramids were built. Those were a great set of pictures with high detail and certainly self explanatory.

Maybe this should be a sticky. There are lots of new guys on here in the last year or so.

So that's why the side cover didn't want to come off! I figured there had to be something else holding it. I'm assuming this is for any ball bearing small block Tecumseh and not just Rupp engines?

Thank you!

Hey Kenny,

Yes. Many side covers have been pried and beaten into submission...usually not to the benefit of the motor lol.

Don't worry, I didn't force it lol. I was only taking it off to look inside, so I just put the bolts back in and moved on to another shiny object

This is a good post, thanks Michael.

I wish I had this thread last year when I took my Rupp engine apart. I thought it was just stuck and put a puller on mine. Ended up bending the bearing retainer washers and stripping one of the mounting holes for the little bolts. I was able to fix it, but it was worrisome nonetheless.

Sticky it in the Tecumseh forums!

Thanks for sharing.
I did the same thing with mine. Side cover wouldn't come off for nothing.
Little c-clip got me.

Re: Sticky
Agreed Andy- Hopefully it will help others like you and Buckeye from the frustration and potential damage to their engines.
To the Moderators or "Big Daddy" Hent- Can you please get this accomplished?
