Tecumseh 5hp fuel issue

#1
Hello all

I have an enduro OHV 5hp tecumseh engine on my mini bike and I think I’m having a fuel delivery issue. The needle inside the bowl somehow became unattached to the float so I reattached the needle to the float and it starts right up and idles very well but for some reason when I give it throttle, it dies. I tried adjusting the idle screw higher and it will accelerate on its own but when I pull the throttle, it dies. Make it make sense lol

Your getting too much fuel and its killing the engine.

Adjusting a Tecumseh carburetor bowl needle involves setting the float parallel to the carburetor body, usually measured with an 11/64" (4.37mm) drill bit. The float height is adjusted by bending the small metal tab that presses against the needle, ensuring the needle seals without compressing its spring.

Ohhhh okay I see what you mean. The tab on mine was bent too far up and the needle actually slipped out of the tab. When I put it back together I pushed the tab down to stop it from coming out but I must’ve done too much

Update! I took the main jet from the Amazon carb and put it on the old carb along with a new bowl gasket, primed it up and it ran really well. Made it around the block twice without it dying and then all of a sudden it started dying under throttle again like before so I’m baffled

Gas cap vent ok? Float allowing enough fuel to remain in the bowl after two trips around the block?
I’m not sure. I did adjust the float a bit and it did run better than before and I replaced the main jet. Maybe it’s still getting too much fuel? I’ll have to adjust the float again so the needle lets less fuel in the bowl at once

The drill bit thickness method is the perfect height to adjust to.
