I actually got called first, from Don in Jackson, but I was out riding my ATC and missed the call. When I called back and he said that a guy was driving all the way from San Francisco to buy it, I told him that I think I know who that is...and I was right!.

I tried to not say too much more, to avoid messing up the deal.

Is the orange paint original?

Also, why are the wheels so rusty on just one side?

I figured it was someone from OldMiniBikes my first thought was Injuntom.
When I got there he had told me there were 5 others interested but didn't say much more other then if I were to sell it I could get more then twice what I paid for it.
The rims are made in 2 pieces one half being aluminum cast the other half being steel which is why there covered with rust the front fork is pretty badly damaged the spring and the spring bracket have been cut from the frame the shifter is missing the paint is not original incorrect motor and there are a couple of welds added to the motor piviot. All in all it was worth the drive.

That is unfortunate about the damage/modifications.

That chain guard looks impressive though.

What features make the Powell's so popular?

Yes JE the clutch cover/chain guard is one of those pieces that don't turn up that often.

Powell's had a few nice features I'm no expert and maybe member Steve Durham or one of the other members that are into Powell's will ring in on this question.

Here's what I think make the Powell unique.
Detachable handle bars and seat for easy transport.
Quick release throttle allowing the throttle cable to be detached from the handle bars.
Shifter leaver for quick switching for either speed or for torque for climbing.
Large 8" front and rear tires.
There special muffler system.
Check out my pictures if you want more PM me and I'll send you a link to my photobucket page.
I think that just about covers my take on the Powell
Oh yeah and a sweet riding machine.

As for Powell's What made them special well they were made for MEN not for kids I never saw any advertisement slanted to the kids. Of course there were lots of young riders that rode and very successfully raced the Powell's . Kids didn't care about a mini bike that would come apart and fit inside a full size sedan's trunk or would sit down flat on the frame and not tip over that was Dad & Mom's worry. The full size rider began to enjoy the great ride from well working suspension and the great trail taming power of the bigger machines and of course the very competitive price. That's why I have 3

Steve,

What do you mean by "sit down flat on the frame and not tip over" ? A little more explanation on how that works, or a link to a picture of an old ad, would be interesting.

From the pictures that I have seen, the rear suspension that looks like a monoshock was the most interesting.
