I can’t help but wonder what skills you’re hoping to gain through practice. I guess I’m imagining some kind of machine work like cylinder boring or valve work.
If it’s just general engine repair I’d recommend getting a cheap mid 70s hs50 from a snowblower take it apart, evaluate it, recondition it as required, put it together and make it run.

Porting is a learned skill. Setting points and timing...I think you learn those skills one time and then you can only use that skill set on old, point-ignition magneto Tecumseh engines...(some Clintons, Power Products...but not many of those are still floating around.)

I do have a running H35 I can donate if you can use it.

personally i avoid h35 engines. most are side poppers, which is difficult when dealing with an exhaust. and they are under powered for my old fat butt. i probably have hs40 and hs50 i could sell. but the shipping is the killer. finding a local snowblower for sale is the best course... well unless you live down south or in las vegas or california...
