Wardog's Balloon Tire Scratch Build - Anything Goes

I rode it for the first time today...... and it is AWESOME! It handles beautifully and stops effortlessly, but most surprising of all is the POWER! It has waaaay more grunt and speed than I was expecting. My friend Dan followed me on his new Honda scooter and said I was doing an easy 25mph, and it can accelerate up a fairly steep hill in first gear no problem. The coolest part though is the 2 speed.... it is soooo satisfying when it grabs second. Second hits hard, but the engine definitely drops out of its power band, so I'm thinking of changing the spring in the jackshaft clutch back to an 1800 rpm which would have it shift into second at about 4100 rpm vs 3300 rpm now. The mikuni carb started right up and the hot dog muffler is pretty loud and "poppy", and man does she like to rev. It was hovering around 5000 rpm at 25 mph and was still climbing. I think it will do 6k.... esp downhill. We have a trail riding session planned for this weekend, and I will be sure to get some video.

LOL I was picturing this massive bike the size of a Honda goldwing the whole time! That this is screaming for some sort of camo paint but Fuscia would be an awesome opposite.

Yea, I wish I could have kept it a little lighter, but I'm very confident in the strength. It is 130 lbs with oil and 1/2 tank gas.

Wow...awesome. Glad the tensioner worked as it wouldn't on my Lil Indian (mine was not geared). That is a very cool bike...agree with changing the clutch spring to keep it in the power band.

Test ride vids. The carb is giving me fits, and it needs different springs in the jackshaft clutch, but overall it is a success.

Vid links wont work, just search "balloon tire test ride" on YouTube.

That is so cool I would have killed to have something like that growing up. It's great that we have the resources to build and create such cool machines. Great job.

Thanks Charles for linking the vids.

I cannot get the carb adjusted properly, it wants to break up and cut out anywhere near full throttle, but I have a different, slightly smaller carb on the way that will hopefully take care of that. Also it seems like the little engine doesnt make much low end power, but it likes to rev, so I feel like changing the clutch springs for higher rpms will help a ton. I ordered the springs to raise the initial engagement on the engine clutch to 2550 rpm and raise the shift point to 4800 rpm at 14mph. After the shift, the engine rpm will drop to around 2900 and accelerate to around 27 mph at 5500 rpm.

I finally got her running properly! I rode with some buddies yesterday, and beat on it for 3 hrs strait with no issues.

Swapped the original carb back on so I jad to make some linkage.

The 79cc is pretty guttless below about 3000 rpm and I still want some more low end grunt so I am changing out the 84 tooth sprocket for a 112 tooth. I never would have guessed tjat I would have to have such crazy reduction..... 27.2 to 1! It has to be one of the highest ratios of any mini bike, but it should still do over 20mph in second.
