what are you listening to v.2.0

One of the biggest mysteries of 1969.

Ron Dante is the only artist to have two Billboard top ten singles on the charts at the same time with two different fictional bands, including the number # 1 hit record of the year. Two top ten singles and nobody knew who he was.

A set of studio musicians was assembled by Don Kirshner in 1968 to perform various songs. Their most famous song is "Sugar, Sugar", written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, which went to number one on the pop chart in 1969, sold over six million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. In the Billboard Hot 100, it was ranked as the No. 1 song of that year, the only time a fictional band has ever claimed Billboard's annual Hot 100 top spot. Male vocals for the fictional Archies group were provided by The Cuff Links' lead singer Ron Dante.

The Cuff Links were also a fictional group - "Tracy" was performed entirely by Ron Dante. His vocals were recorded 15 times over to make it sound like a big group was singing. Dante says that all the vocal tracks were done in about two hours. The single went to #9 on the Billboard charts.

At one point, Dante had two records in the US Top 10 (both by fictional groups), but was precluded by contract from disclosing that it was he who sang "Sugar, Sugar" and "Tracy."
