Leopold Kraus Wellenkapelle (often referred to as LKW) is a German surf-rock band from Freiburg, known as the "Kings of Black Forest Surf." Instead of traditional tropical themes, the band blends 1960s instrumental beat, exotica, and punk with German and regional alpine flair.
The band's quirky name originated before their first show when members wanted a deliberately "unpretentious, clunky, and silly" name. This later evolved into a running joke/myth that the band's fictional namesake, "Leopold Kraus," was the rector of a Black Forest surf school who once fled from East Germany on a surfboard.
