1971 Tecumseh HS40 difficult to start

You are right skipp.. I am not familiar with timing an engine, but maybe it was hard to start for the previous owner.. Didn’t look too difficult when looking through the manual. Will have to do it on my next trip to Alabama. I live in southeast Florida. Thank you all for your advice and know how!

1971 Tecumseh HS40 difficult to start

Oriiginal cam. As far as timing, I didn’t mess with it. Maybe I should have. When I mean hard to start, not hard to pull, just pull and pull. 15-20!times. Shoulder gets tired, so I take off recoil and put drill on. That seems to get it going.

1971 Tecumseh HS40 difficult to start

Hello, I have recently rebuilt a 1971 Tecumseh HS40. New rings, seals, gasket kit, points and condenser. I also purchased a new carburetor from Blackwidow motor sports. My problem is, the engine is difficult to start. I did take the recoil off and put a drill and socket to rotate, then it did...

    Tecumseh recoil 1971

I had bought a Tecumseh recoil on line. Looked to be like OEM, but had 3 dogs inside instead of one. I did take two of the dogs out and installed. Now when I pull the recoil out, most of the time it doesn’t want to rewind unless I use my fingers to get it started, then it will finish rewinding...

    1971 HS 40 recoil

Hello, I have a 1971 HS 40 Tecumseh that I would like to service the recoil assembly. I am having a hard time removing the screw that holds the metal cup with a starter dog on the back side of the recoil. It is partially stripped on the head. If I can get it out, is there a size or a part number...

    Engine ID Plate

Other than my photos of ID plate, for you ecperts, any other ideas. Could not find any blank plates on E-bay. I suppose I could cut out my own plate. Would just need to find someone to restamp the numbers.

    Engine ID Plate

Yes, it’s my own fault. Didn’t think it would damage the plate like that. Lesson learned!

    Engine ID Plate

Hello, I recently took some parts to a local sandblaster to get some rust removed. One part was the blower housing on a 1971 HS 40. Unfortunately they got a little carried away and got into my ID plate. Now I can't read all the numbers on the plate. I do however have them on a few photos. Has...

    1971 Tecumseh HS40 slanted intake

Actually, I am rebuilding this engine, and quite a few people on this forum seem to like the slide carb better. I’ll get it together and try the stock carb first and see how it runs.

    1971 Tecumseh HS40 slanted intake

I haven't purchased one yet. Is there one you would recommend? I didn't want to buy one, then not be able to use it with the stock manifold. Thanks for the quick reply.

    1971 Tecumseh HS40 slanted intake

Hello, am I able to use my stock slanted HS40 intake manifold to run a PZ16 on it, or does it need a custom intake manifold to use?

Tecumseh 7hp crank swap please. Help soon tearing them down in the morning

The same guy said he had an extra slanted intake manifold for a PZ16 carburetor he would sell. When I PM'd him and asked for a photo, I got no response, but he kept posting about lots of other things, so I knew he was still on the forum.

    Tecumseh intake manifold for PZ16

Tried to PM you. Not sure if you got it. Do you have a photo of your slanted intake for a PZ16 carburetor? Thank you

    Tecumseh intake manifold for PZ16

I have a slanted stock Tecumseh HS40 on a Super Charger. Is there anyone that makes an intake manifold to run the PZ16? I know I could ream out the holes on the carburetor, but was hoping to find something to either bolt straight to the block or at least, push it farther out from the engine...
