Tecumseh HS40 Side Cover Bore

#1
I have an HS40 with a badly worn side cover crank bore. It is .007 over size, and the crank running surface measures .003 under size. Both surfaces are very rough. My Question: Has anyone bored and bushed the side cover as well as repair welding and turning the crank running surface? I can't believe they designed this motor without a bearing on the clutch side!! Seems to be a sacrificial design, "crank running on a soft aluminum bore". I know others have experienced this problem as these parts are impossible to find. Does anyone have a source for replacing these parts??

The higher end bikes had a bearing on the pto side. Rupps, Speedways, ect.
I think it would be more cost effective to find a doner engine then to have the machine work done.
