B&S 6hp - Starts then dies

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I have a Craftsman weed cutter with a 6hp B&S Quantum engine. It was in storage for a long while. Before trying to restart it I drained the old fuel, removed and dismantled the carburetor, cleaned it and replaced some gaskets. Also replaced the throttle spring and installed the new spark plug.

It will run momentarily after pressing the primer bulb 3x then die out. I can see fuel in the carburetor throat after priming.

Engine has good compression and the carburetor float and needle are working properly.

What am I missing here?

Many Thanks.

Sounds like the passages may have gotten clogged in the carb due to bad gas, I have a push mower with a similar engine and it took swapping carbs from another mower to solve the problem. The carb looked fine, bowl was clean and the float and needle/seat looked fine too but it would not run for more than a second or two. Good thing is carbs are cheap, I'd try an ultrasonic cleaner or a soak in some B12 Chemtool to try and clean it first. I've also poured a cap or two of chemtool into the fuel tank on poor running mowers, over time they cleaned themselves more times than not. Did the same with my Mikuni on my Trailblazer, it didn't want to idle well or accelerate and within minutes it cleared right up. Good luck.

It may be just a weak fuel pump. I have had this on several and its just a couple of screws to get to the fuel pump to replace the gasket and spring. Hope that helps.
