Bug Stinger Sidewinder

#1
Found this on Craigslist today. I'm not sure of the year. It hasn't really been butchered with the B&S transplant (I believe it's a 3 or 3 1/2 hp) although the guy welded the clutch to the shaft. I am surprised at how small it is. I'm 6ft.and there's no way I'm racing that. My 12 year old daughter loves it! She couldn't believe what was in the back of the truck when I brought it home.
She's already driven it and thinks it's hers.I guess the resto will have to wait for a while.
Can anyone shed some light on what year and model ( I have read some are sprint/ enduro??) I have here? Much appreciated, Thanks.

You got a great kart..... its got the short front porch like mine a early model 1970S nylite rims airheart disk brakes Better get a hold of Bug quick they maybe closing down ....looks like you may need the sidewinder motor mount plate they have the upholstery .....what works best on the kart is the new west bend 820 with the mccullogh tapered crank (skip the macs) so you can use a good clutch ava thru US motor power or Dave bonbright ...The seat back tank can be found new Greg Govia .....most of the info can be found on the VKA vintage karting site ...the VKA runs all kinds of vintage kart events all across the US your daughter will love it ....You got a great kart and not much to restore it and it will only go up in value....contact if I can help thanks

Thanks Ken, Greg. The guy who had it owned it 20 years. He did the mods. His 3 kids all used it. They have all grown up so he decided to sell. I had been looking on CL and could only find newer stuff. Today I decided to search Go "Cart" and there it was. Funny?. Did the longer "front porch" extend the pedals in front of the wheels or was the frame stretched in the middle?Like I said, I'm 6 ft 185 and I don't fit in this thing. My knees are above the steering wheel and my ass doesn't fit in the seat. I guess it is my kids.

That looks very nice chainsaw, I can see the frame extends past the front axle considerably more. Mine is a competition orange color (which would indicate mid- 70's?)The tabs are there for the motor mount. I just need to cut off the "twin steel chair leg mount" on there and clean up the tubes.$2700 for a repop. Wow. I paid 13% of that.I guess I did alright. Thanks guys.

Some one did a good job mounting that engine without messing up the frame. Mine came from the factory in blue, just like the yellow better.

Does your 820 still have the pull starter on it, if not will the pull start fit without hitting the seat ? What kind of mount did you use, I need more power. Thanks.

The one thing I notice is if you look at the rear shot of my kart just to the right of the chain on the top of the rear cross member (you can use your magnifier on the jpeg) you can see where something was welded there from the factory. It has the stock paint on it. Any idea? Your kart doesn't have it chainsaw. It is centered on the tube.

On the stinger a pull start maybe tight I start mine from the clutch side with a allen hex bolt and a kart starter like a modern kart The stock US 820 has real smooth power (no need for the copper head model ) always starts and runs..... If you get it with the Mac tapered shaft you can use a nice Horstman or Burco dry or oil clutch or use the clutch from the mac 49 sell the mac 49 on ebay .. for the older WB crankshaft the only new clutch is the Noram but get the billet drum...... but they brake clutch springs you can get those from Comet karts ..... .If you can get the new US 820 with the tapered shaft from dave Bonbrite not a used one I think they are around $500 a deal cause you can get parts when you figure the cost of a used engine and a rebuild ....the only part thats hard to find is a header to run a pipe but they make a nice repop muffler the motor mount comes from Comet karts you may have to buy the kit or just machine up the botton to the engine plate....You can see the engines on usmotorpower.com but order it from Dave ...These engines stock are VKA vintage ok ...I stopped running my macs way to fragile and tempermental

Thanks for the info. Trying to find a 2 stroke to fit that has a pull start as I have to run in parking lots, usually by myself. Just a lot easier then having a remote starter. The mc49 I have is nice with the pull start but I want more power.

If you get an 820 with the stepped pto, 5/8 to 9/16 you can get a new Max Torque clutch from Jim Donovan at Max Torque, do not use the Noram, they break the hub after a while, especially if you modify the engine. Try and find an engine with the tapered pto, its a much better setup, the stepped crank also likes to break out the keyway. A stock kart version (Industrial) 820 puts out about 10 HP, the Vintage 820 (Copperhead style) puts out aprox 18 - 20 HP. I think the Industrial type is around $650.00, the Vintage 820 is $1300.00.
The Industrial type can be modified into a Vintage 820 with port work, piston change, head change, reed and carburetor change. You can get a header kit from Terry Ives.
