I have a 5hp briggs flat head that keeps shearing the flywheel key. The recoil clutch was still on tight and I also tried a different recoil clutch, thinking that it might have locked up but it still did it. What else can be causing this to happen.
check the flywheel for cracks . if not that it could be like what i did one time i had a motor that keep shearing keys and nothing seemed out of place . i had changed the recoil clutch and forgot the washer . the new clutch needed a thicker washer to snug up on the wheel .
I put every thing back together and rode for about 15 minutes with no problems. The parts list for that engine shows the washer as a spring washer. Maybe I was putting it in the wrong way or it may need a new one.
